Chapter 3 - Awakening and Motives

The intensive care unit was a symphony of rhythmic beeps and hushed whispers.

The sterile smell of bleach and rubbing alcohol grounded me as I walked down the glaring white hallway.

I pushed open the heavy wooden door to Room 312.

Emily was awake.

She looked pale, fragile, and exhausted, an IV drip running fluids into her bruised forearm.

But when she saw me, her eyes filled with a desperate, frantic light.

“Mom… Grace? Where is she?”

I rushed to her bedside, taking her cold hands in mine.

“She’s safe, sweetheart. She’s in the pediatric wing. Her temperature is back to normal. She’s drinking formula. She is going to be perfectly fine.”

Emily let out a sob that seemed to tear through her entire body.

She collapsed back against the pillows, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“He tried to kill us, Mom,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Brandon tried to kill us.”

“I know,” I said softly, stroking her hair. “He’s in jail. So is Nicole. They aren’t going to hurt you ever again.”

Emily closed her eyes, the memories flashing behind her eyelids.

She took a deep breath and began to explain what had happened.

She had gone to the pharmacy to get more diapers and some ibuprofen for her post-surgery pain.

When she returned, Brandon was waiting.

He told her he wanted to talk, that he was sorry for the fights, and that he wanted to be a family again.

“He gave me water,” Emily rasped. “It tasted bitter. I told him I felt dizzy.”

“They drugged you,” I confirmed. “The blood test showed heavy traces of a potent muscle relaxant and a sedative.”

“I tried to fight them,” she cried. “But I couldn't lift my arms. I heard the man… Tyler… say it would only take twenty minutes in the sun to make it look like an accident.”

I clenched my jaw, suppressing the violent rage boiling inside me.

“Why, Emily? Why would he do this? He’s arrogant and cruel, but murder?”

Emily looked out the window, staring into the dark night.

“Tomorrow is my twenty-fifth birthday, Mom.”

The realization hit me like a physical blow to the chest.

My late husband, Arthur, had been a very successful real estate developer.

Before he died, he set up a massive trust fund for Emily.

It contained not just money, but highly valuable commercial properties and stock portfolios.

The stipulation was clear: Emily would inherit full, unrestricted control of the trust on her twenty-fifth birthday.

Unless she died before then.

If Emily passed away, the trust would transfer to her next of kin.

Because Grace was a minor, Brandon, as the surviving parent and legal guardian, would gain complete control of a multi-million dollar estate.

“He found the trust documents last month,” Emily said, her voice turning cold.

“He wanted to invest the money into some cryptocurrency scam. He owes millions to dangerous people, Mom.”

“I told him no. I told him I was filing for divorce because of Nicole.”

Everything fell into place.

It wasn't a crime of passion. It wasn't temporary insanity.

It was a cold, calculated, premeditated business transaction.

He hired Tyler and Vanessa to make it look like a tragic case of a sleep-deprived, postpartum mother accidentally locking herself and her baby in a hot car.

A tragic accident that would solve all his financial problems and leave him infinitely rich.

“He miscalculated,” I said, my voice hardening.

“He forgot whose daughter you are.”

I kissed her forehead and stood up.

“Rest now, Emily. I have work to do.”

I walked out of the hospital, the night air cooling my skin.

Brandon thought he was a predator playing a game.

He was about to find out that a mother protecting her child is a force of nature he could not comprehend.
