Chapter 6 - The Courtroom Showdown

The family court building was an imposing structure of marble and echoing hallways.
It had been one week since the incident in the driveway.
Emily was sitting beside me at the plaintiff’s table, looking strong and resolute in a navy blue suit.
Grace was safely at home with Mrs. Alvarez and an armed security guard I had hired.
Today was the emergency custody hearing.
Brandon sat across the aisle, flanked by three high-priced lawyers, looking smug and overly confident.
His father, the retired judge, sat in the gallery, glaring holes into my back.
The presiding judge, Judge Hawthorne, banged her gavel to call the room to order.
Brandon’s lead attorney stood up first, launching into a rehearsed, theatrical monologue.
“Your Honor, my client is a devoted father seeking to protect his daughter from a deeply unstable woman. Emily Hayes suffers from severe postpartum psychosis.”
He paced the floor, holding up a fabricated psychiatric evaluation.
“She intentionally locked herself and the child in a vehicle to elicit sympathy and punish my client. The video evidence is circumstantial at best, showing my client merely leaving the scene of a marital dispute.”
Judge Hawthorne looked down over her glasses at Emily.
“Mrs. Hayes, this is a serious allegation. Your lawyer may respond.”
Our lawyer, a brilliant and aggressive litigator named Sarah Vance—my PI’s daughter—stood up calmly.
“Your Honor, we submit into evidence Exhibit A: a complete financial audit of Brandon Hayes, proving a massive motive for murder regarding the victim's trust fund.”
Brandon scoffed aloud, rolling his eyes.
“Furthermore,” Sarah continued, raising her voice. “We have a witness who will completely dismantle the defendant’s false narrative.”
The double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.
Nicole walked in, escorted by two police officers and her newly appointed public defender.
Brandon’s smug expression instantly vanished. He gripped the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white.
“Objection!” his lawyer shouted. “This witness is a co-defendant in a pending criminal trial! Her testimony here is highly prejudicial!”
“Overruled,” Judge Hawthorne said sharply. “Take the stand, young woman.”
Nicole sat in the witness box, avoiding Brandon’s murderous glare.
Under Sarah’s precise questioning, Nicole laid everything bare.
She detailed the plot. She explained the drugged water. She confirmed the premeditated nature of the attack to secure the trust fund.
Then, Sarah presented the encrypted flash drive logs to the judge.
“These logs, Your Honor, verify that Brandon Hayes hired two known felons to tamper with a vehicle, intentionally creating a death trap.”
Brandon could no longer contain himself.
His facade of the calm, concerned father completely shattered.
“She’s lying!” he screamed, standing up and violently shoving his own chair backward.
“She’s a crazy, jealous bitch! Margaret paid her to say this! I’m the victim here!”
He looked deranged, his face purple with rage, spit flying from his lips.
Judge Hawthorne slammed her gavel repeatedly.
“Bailiff, restrain him!”
Two large bailiffs grabbed Brandon by the arms, forcing him back into his seat.
“Mr. Hayes, you have just demonstrated exactly the kind of volatility that endangers a child,” the judge said coldly.
“Emergency sole custody is immediately granted to Emily Hayes. Furthermore, I am revoking your bail on the criminal charges, effective immediately.”
The sound of handcuffs clicking around Brandon’s wrists in the middle of a courtroom was poetic justice.
He looked back at me as they dragged him away, but there was no arrogance left in his eyes.
Only the absolute terror of a man who realized he had lost everything.
