Chapter 7 - Tyler, Vanessa, and the Trap

With Brandon back behind bars and denied bail, the police focused entirely on capturing the accomplices.

Tyler and Vanessa were ghosts, moving between cheap motels and paying in cash.

But ghosts leave digital footprints, especially when they think they haven't been paid in full.

Detective Miller brought me into the precinct to observe the final phase of the operation.

Nicole had agreed to help the police trap them as part of her plea deal.

Sitting in an interrogation room with a detective beside her, Nicole typed a message to the encrypted number Tyler had used.

“Brandon is locked up. I have the rest of your money. Fifty thousand. I need to get out of town tonight. Meet me at the old shipyard.”

For twenty agonizing minutes, there was no response.

I stood behind the two-way glass, holding my breath.

Then, the burner phone buzzed.

“Come alone. If we see cops, you’re dead.”

The trap was set.

At midnight, the abandoned shipyard was a labyrinth of rusted shipping containers and towering cranes.

The fog rolling in from the bay made it look like a scene from a nightmare.

Nicole sat alone in a parked car, a briefcase full of fake prop money on the passenger seat.

Hidden inside the shipping containers, a heavily armed SWAT team waited in absolute silence.

Detective Miller and I watched the drone feed from a mobile command center parked a mile away.

“Movement,” the drone operator announced.

A dark grey sedan with no license plates rolled silently into the shipyard, its headlights off.

It parked fifty yards away from Nicole’s car.

Two figures stepped out into the fog. Tyler and Vanessa.

They approached Nicole’s car cautiously, hands in their jacket pockets, looking around for any sign of a setup.

Tyler tapped on the window.

Nicole rolled it down, her hands shaking violently.

“Where is it?” Tyler growled.

Nicole handed him the briefcase.

Tyler popped the latches. He saw the bundles of paper, realized it wasn't cash, and his eyes went wide.

“It’s a setup!” he yelled, reaching into his jacket for a weapon.

“Go, go, go!” Detective Miller yelled into his radio.

Floodlights instantly illuminated the entire shipyard, turning night into day.

“Police! Drop your weapons! Get on the ground!”

Dozens of officers swarmed from the shadows, laser sights painting red dots across Tyler and Vanessa’s chests.

Tyler hesitated for a second, weighing his options, looking at the overwhelming force surrounding him.

He slowly pulled his hand out of his jacket, dropping a heavy black pistol onto the concrete.

Vanessa put her hands in the air, cursing loudly.

They were slammed to the ground and cuffed within seconds.

Back at the precinct, it didn't take long for them to break.

Unlike Brandon, they had no loyalty to anyone but themselves.

Faced with attempted murder charges, they immediately confessed to everything, providing the final nail in Brandon’s coffin.

They admitted he had specifically instructed them to permanently disable the locks from the inside so there was no chance of escape.

The conspiracy was fully documented, corroborated, and sealed.

I walked out of the police station as the sun began to rise over the city.

The sky was a brilliant, bruised purple, giving way to a bright, golden morning.

The long nightmare was finally over.

I got into my car and drove home, ready to see my daughter and my granddaughter.
