Chapter 5 - The Mistress Cracks

The neon sign of the Starlight Motel buzzed annoyingly in the damp evening air.
I parked my car a few spots away from Room 114, pulling my coat tighter around my shoulders.
Vance had tracked Nicole’s burner phone to this location.
Brandon had abandoned her here, instructing her not to speak to anyone, promising he would handle the lawyers.
But I knew Brandon; he was likely setting her up to take the fall.
I knocked on the peeling green door.
Three sharp raps.
“Go away, I ordered delivery, just leave it!” a muffled, panicked voice called out.
“Nicole,” I said loudly, pressing my face near the doorframe. “It’s Margaret. Open the door before I call Detective Miller and tell him you’re planning to flee the state.”
Silence.
Then, the sound of an unlocking deadbolt.
The door cracked open, chained from the inside.
Nicole looked terrible. Her expensive makeup was smeared, her hair was unwashed, and she smelled of stale wine and fear.
“What do you want?” she hissed, her eyes darting around the parking lot.
“I want to save your life,” I said smoothly. “May I come in?”
She hesitated, then undid the chain, letting me step into the dingy room.
The space was littered with fast-food wrappers and empty bottles.
“Brandon says everything is fine,” Nicole said, crossing her arms defensively. “He said the video proves nothing.”
“Brandon is a liar,” I replied, taking a seat on the only clean chair in the room.
I reached into my bag and pulled out a manila envelope, tossing it onto the bed.
“Open it.”
Nicole’s hands shook as she picked up the envelope and pulled out the documents.
They were banking records Vance had obtained, along with drafted legal documents Brandon’s lawyers had prepared.
“What is this?” she asked.
“It’s Brandon’s defense strategy,” I explained. “He’s claiming you acted alone. He’s telling the court that you were obsessed with him, jealous of Emily, and that you hired Tyler and Vanessa without his knowledge.”
Nicole’s face went chalk-white.
“No… no, he wouldn’t. He loves me. We’re going to be rich.”
“He is millions of dollars in debt to the mob, Nicole!” I snapped, my patience wearing thin.
“He doesn't love you. He used you. And right now, you are facing twenty-five years to life in a maximum-security women's prison for attempted murder.”
She dropped the papers, her knees giving out. She collapsed onto the bed, burying her face in her hands.
“I didn't want to hurt the baby,” she sobbed, a pathetic, broken sound.
“I just wanted Emily out of the way. He told me it would be quick. He told me we would get the trust fund and run away to Europe.”
“Where did he find Tyler and Vanessa?” I demanded, leaning forward.
Nicole looked up, mascara running down her cheeks like black tears.
“The dark web. He used a hidden browser. He paid them fifty thousand dollars in cash up front. They are professional fixers.”
“Do you have proof?”
She hesitated, biting her lip.
“Nicole,” I said softly, employing every ounce of motherly sternness I had. “If you don't give me the proof, I will personally make sure you take the fall for all of it. But if you help me, I will hire you a lawyer who will negotiate a plea deal. You might get out in five years.”
She stared at me, realizing she had entirely run out of options.
She reached under the mattress and pulled out a heavy, encrypted flash drive.
“He made me hold onto this. It has the chat logs. The Bitcoin transfers. Everything.”
I took the drive, feeling the cold metal in my palm.

“Pack your bags,” I told her. “I’m taking you to the District Attorney.”
The web of lies was finally beginning to unravel.
