Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Mirror

The morning sun filtered through the heavy silk drapes of Marcus’s bedroom, casting long, golden bars across the dark hardwood floor. I woke slowly, the heavy scent of sandalwood and expensive cologne lingering on the sheets beneath me. For a terrifying second, I forgot where I was. I sat up quickly, pulling the heavy duvet around my shoulders, only to wince as a sharp twinge of pain flared in my heel. The memories of last night rushed back like a tidal wave—the shattered vase, Marcus’s hands on my skin, his deep voice cutting through the silence, and his decision to carry me into his private sanctuary.
I looked around the room. It was vast, impeccably clean, and utterly devoid of softness, much like the man who owned it. A walk-in closet stood slightly ajar, revealing rows of tailored suits and crisp white shirts arranged with terrifying precision. Marcus was nowhere in sight. The space beside me on the massive king-sized bed was cold, proving that he had left hours ago. I threw my legs over the side of the bed, careful to keep my injured foot elevated, and searched for my slippers.
A knock sounded at the heavy mahogany door before it slowly creaked open. A middle-aged woman in a neat black dress stepped inside, carrying a silver tray laden with fresh fruit, warm pastries, and coffee. Her name was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, though in the 3 years I had lived here, she had barely spoken more than a dozen words to me.
“Good morning, Mrs. Valentino,” she said smoothly, her voice betraying no surprise at finding me in the master bedroom. “The boss instructed me to bring you breakfast. He said you are not to put weight on your foot.”
I blinked, heat rising to my cheeks. “Oh. Thank you, Mrs. Gable. Where is Marcus?”
“He had an early meeting at the harbor district,” she replied, setting the tray gently on the bedside table. “He left specific instructions with Alessandro that security detail is to remain doubled outside your door until he returns this evening.”
My breath hitched. Doubled security? For a cut on my heel? It felt suffocating, yet beneath the apprehension, a strange warmth fluttered in my chest. For 3 years, I had been a ghost in this penthouse, ignored and left to fade into the background. Now, with a single night, the entire dynamic of my existence had shifted. Mrs. Gable lingered for a moment, her sharp eyes softening just a fraction as she looked at me.

“He is a hard man, child,” she murmured, speaking almost to herself. “The hardest this city has ever seen. But he has never looked at another soul the way he looks at you when he thinks no one is watching.”
Before I could ask what she meant, she bowed her head respectfully and slipped out of the room, leaving me alone with my racing thoughts. I picked up a delicate porcelain teacup, my mind replaying Marcus’s words from the night before. I am aware of every breath you take in this house. The confession hung in the air like a heavy perfume. If he had been watching me all this time, why had he kept his distance? What dark secrets was he keeping that forced him to lock me away in this golden prison? The answers were out there, hidden behind the stone walls of the Valentino empire, and for the first time in 3 years, I knew I had to find them.
