Chapter 9 - The Unbroken Vow

The morning of our renewal ceremony dawned bright and clear, washing away the remnants of the storm that had dictated our lives for so long. There were no flashing cameras, no fearful syndicate bosses, and no cold courthouse judges. Just a private ceremony on the lush, sun-drenched terrace of a secluded coastal estate in Italy—the ancestral home of the Valentino family, overlooking the endless, crashing blue waves of the Mediterranean.
Only a handful of people were present. My mother and younger sister stood near the flower-arch altar, tears of joy streaming down their faces as they watched me walk down the stone aisle. My mother no longer lived in a cramped, debt-ridden apartment; Marcus had quietly relocated them to a beautiful, secure estate in the countryside, ensuring they would never have to fear the shadows of the past again.
And standing at the altar waiting for me was Marcus.
He wore a pristine cream-colored linen suit, his dark hair catching the Mediterranean sun, his fierce gray eyes locked onto mine with a gaze so intense it felt as though he were drinking in every single step I took. Alessandro stood beside him as best man, offering a rare, approving nod as I finally reached Marcus’s side.
“You look like a dream, cara mia,” Marcus whispered as I placed my hand in his warm, steady grip.
“You clean up alright yourself, Valentino,” I teased softly, a bright smile breaking across my face.
The local priest, an old man who had known Marcus since he was a grieving orphan thrust into the brutal underworld, smiled gently and began the vows. But when it came time for Marcus to speak, he didn't follow the traditional script. He dropped the cue cards, turned to face me fully, and took both of my hands in his.
“3 years ago, I took you from a world that was trying to destroy you,” Marcus’s voice rang out, clear, resonant, and filled with a raw, undeniable emotion that silenced the gentle sea breeze. “I thought I was saving a life, protecting a fragile thing from the monsters of the dark. But I was wrong. You weren't fragile. You were the strongest soul I had ever encountered, and you brought light into a life that had only ever known blood and ash.”
He paused, his thumb stroking my knuckles. “I promise to protect you with every breath in my body, to stand beside you in the light, and to love you until my last heartbeat claims me. You are my anchor, Elena. My heart, my queen, my absolute life.”

Tears blurred my vision as I squeezed his hands tightly. “And I promise to love all of you, Marcus—the darkness, the light, the monster and the man. Forever.”
When the priest pronounced us husband and wife once more, Marcus pulled me into his arms and kissed me in front of the world—a deep, passionate, unyielding vow that erased every lingering ghost of our past. The applause from my family and Alessandro echoed against the stone cliffs, signaling the true beginning of our eternity.
