Chapter 7 - The Wrath of the Valentino

The armored Mercedes sped through the rain-slicked streets of the city at a breakneck speed, leaving the Grand Continental Hotel far behind. Inside the back seat, the atmosphere was thick with a suffocating, lethal tension. Marcus sat beside me, his fingers laced tightly with mine, his thumb rubbing soothing circles over my knuckles. But his jaw was set in stone, and his eyes burned with a dark, terrifying fire.

We didn't return to the penthouse. Instead, the car descended deep into the industrial harbor district, pulling up before a massive, windowless brick warehouse surrounded by shipping containers and armed guards in heavy tactical gear. This was the beating heart of the Valentino syndicate’s punitive operations—a place where traitors and enemies came to disappear.

Alessandro opened the door, and Marcus stepped out, carefully helping me down despite the pouring rain. My injured heel throbbed, but I refused to show weakness. I stood tall beside him, my hand resting securely in the crook of his arm. Marcus looked down at me, a flicker of hesitation crossing his storm-gray eyes.

“You don’t have to come inside, cara,” he murmured softly, shielding me from the driving rain with his own broad shoulders. “Wait in the car.”

“No,” I replied, my voice steady and resolute. “For 3 years, I lived in the dark, protected from the reality of who you are. If I am your wife, I stand beside you. In the light and in the blood.”

A slow, fierce admiration ignited in Marcus’s eyes. He nodded once, pulling me close against his side as we walked through the heavy steel doors of the warehouse. Inside, the cavernous space smelled of rust, damp concrete, and fear. Tied securely to a steel chair in the center of the room was Viktor Rostov. His expensive suit was torn, a nasty bruise colored his cheek, and his arrogant swagger had been replaced by a thin sheen of nervous sweat.

When he saw Marcus and me walking toward him out of the shadows, Rostov scoffed, struggling against his bindings.

“Marcus!” Rostov laughed, though his voice lacked its previous bravado. “You bring your little bride to a slaughterhouse? What are you going to do? Let her watch you play executioner?”

Marcus stopped a few feet away from him, his face a mask of absolute, chilling calm. He slowly unbuttoned his suit jacket, handing it to Alessandro, before stepping forward.

“You broke the code, Rostov,” Marcus said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls like cracking ice. “You brought violence to a civilian sanctuary. You threatened my wife.”

“She’s a liability!” Rostov snarled, spitting blood onto the concrete. “A syndicate boss cannot afford a heart, Valentino! You brought her out tonight, and you showed the world your weakness. I only accelerated the inevitable!”

Marcus didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He simply pulled a heavy, silver-plated silenced pistol from his waistband, walking slowly toward the Russian boss.

“You think she is a weakness?” Marcus asked softly, standing inches from Rostov’s face. “You are a fool. She is the only reason I haven't burned the Bratva to ash years ago.”

Rostov’s eyes widened as he finally saw the absolute, unhinged devotion burning behind Marcus’s cold facade. Before he could speak another word, Marcus raised the pistol and fired twice into his shoulders, followed by a final, decisive shot that silenced the Russian leader forever.

I watched the execution without flinching. No horror rose in my chest—only a profound, unshakeable understanding of the man who held my heart. Marcus turned away from the body, walking back to me through the crimson light, wiping a speck of blood from his cheek with the back of his hand. He stopped before me, his hands gently framing my face, his thumb brushing away a stray lock of hair.

“Are you afraid of me now?” he whispered, his voice laced with a vulnerability he showed to no one else.

I shook my head, leaning my cheek into his warm palm. “No, Marcus. I was never afraid of you. I was only afraid of losing you.”
