Chapter 6 - The Reckoning

The courtroom was a sterile, unforgiving environment, a stark contrast to the opulence of the Carter estate. The gallery was packed, filled with the same socialites who had sat at their dining table, now whispering behind their hands and avoiding Daniel’s gaze. He looked like a shell of the man he had been; his suit was impeccable, but his eyes were haunted by the encroaching reality of his ruin.

When Emma took the stand, the room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. She didn't look at Daniel. She spoke directly to the judge, her voice steady and articulate, detailing the years of emotional manipulation and the sophisticated financial crimes he had committed.

"He didn't just break my heart," she said, her voice ringing clear throughout the chamber. "He broke my agency. He treated me as an extension of his own ambition. When I stopped being a reflection of his ego, he decided I was a liability to be discarded. But he underestimated the very person he spent years trying to break."

Daniel’s defense team tried to paint Emma as a woman who had simply snapped, a scorned wife seeking revenge. They brought up her 'sensitive' nature, trying to weaponize his own gaslighting against her. But Emma was prepared. She produced the recordings, the ledger copies, and the sworn statements from former employees. Every time they tried to spin a narrative, she punctured it with cold, hard facts. She saw Daniel’s face change—the arrogance fading, replaced by a raw, naked fear. He was realizing that the woman on the stand was not the woman he had known. She was a stranger, and she was the one holding the gavel.
