Chapter 7 - The Final Act

The verdict was swift and devastating. As the judge read the sentence—ten years of federal imprisonment for fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy—the courtroom erupted in a flurry of whispers. Daniel sat slumped in his chair, his head bowed, his once-invincible reputation lying in ruins at his feet. The Carter name, once synonymous with power and wealth, was now a warning to the city.

Emma walked out of the courtroom, the heavy oak doors swinging shut behind her, sealing away the shadow of the man who had defined her identity for so long. The media swarmed like a pack of wolves, but she was shielded by Jonathan and a small, professional security team. She didn't give a statement. She didn't need to. Her actions had spoken louder than any press release could.

She went back to the estate one last time, purely to collect the few personal belongings that held meaning—items he had deemed worthless, like her old journals and a few photographs from before they were married. The house felt hollow, a monument to a life that had never really belonged to her. She walked through the dining room, looking at the spot where she had fallen that night. She knelt down, not in pain, but in gratitude. She was finally, truly free. She picked up a single, discarded napkin from the floor—a memento of the night she chose herself over her marriage—and dropped it into a trash bin on her way out. She never looked back.
