Chapter 4 - Dawn At Columbia: The Unexpected Encounter On Campus

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray overcast of Manhattan, casting a pale, weak light over the historic, ivy-covered brick buildings of the Columbia University campus.
Students hurried across the cobblestone walkways with heavy backpacks slung over their shoulders, clutching steaming cups of coffee against the crisp autumn morning chill.
Maya Lin walked briskly across the central plaza, her long dark hair pulled back into a neat ponytail, wearing a simple woolen sweater and carrying a stack of thick economics textbooks.
Despite the exhaustion weighing heavily beneath her dark-circled eyes, her head remained held high with the same fierce, unyielding pride she had displayed on the eightieth floor the night before.
As she approached the steps of the main library, a sleek, black bulletproof Maybach quietly pulled up to the red curb, idling smoothly against the university traffic regulations.
Maya didn’t give the luxury vehicle a second glance, assuming it belonged to some spoiled billionaire trust-fund kid visiting the campus for a morning lecture.
Then the rear door of the Maybach glided open silently, and a tall, impeccably tailored man stepped out onto the stone pavement with an aura of undeniable, dangerous authority.
It was Viktor Vance.
He wore a sharp charcoal trench coat over his suit, his tattooed fingers holding a single, unlit Cuban cigar as he calmly stepped directly into Maya’s walking path.
Maya stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as she recognized the dangerous man from table fourteen at the penthouse restaurant.
For a split second, panic flickered in her dark eyes, but it was instantly replaced by the stubborn, fiery defiance that had so thoroughly fascinated him the night before.
“If you’re here to complain about the cold Margaux or the dirty floor, I’m off the clock until six this evening,” Maya shot back instantly, her voice crisp and unapologetic.
Viktor let out a low, genuine chuckle that sounded rich and warm against the chilly morning air, clearly enjoying her absolute refusal to be intimidated by his formidable reputation.
“Good morning to you too, Maya,” Viktor replied smoothly, taking a slow step closer while Kaelen remained stationed by the open door of the vehicle.
“What do you want, Mr. Vance?” Maya demanded, clutching her stack of economics textbooks tightly against her chest like a protective shield. “If you’re here to get me fired, the manager already told you I need this job to pay my tuition.”
“I don’t fire people who have the courage to tell me the truth, Maya,” Viktor stated calmly, his dark eyes studying her expressive face with intense, analytical curiosity. “In fact, I usually promote them.”
“I don’t want your charity, your promotion, or your attention,” Maya retorted sharply, stepping to the side to walk past him toward the library steps.
“What about your mother’s medical bills? And your brother’s college fund?” Viktor asked smoothly, stopping her in her tracks with a single, devastatingly accurate sentence.
Maya froze instantly, her entire body going rigid as she slowly turned back to face him, her eyes wide with sudden, defensive fury and profound shock.
“How… how do you know about that?” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to maintain her composure.
“I own the city, Maya. Nothing happens in the shadows of Manhattan without my knowledge—especially when it involves predatory loan sharks like Marcus Thorne,” Viktor explained, stepping closer.
“Marcus Thorne is a monster, but I don’t need your help to deal with him,” Maya spat out venomously, refusing to accept assistance from an underworld kingpin.
“You can’t fight an army with a kitchen knife, Maya,” Viktor warned quietly, his voice dropping an octave as he looked down into her defiant eyes.

“Watch me,” she challenged fiercely, turning on her heel and marching up the library steps without looking back once.
Viktor watched her disappear through the heavy oak doors of the library, the slow, dangerous smile returning to his face as he realized just how deep this game was going to go.
