Chapter 9 - The Campus Ambush: The Trap Is Sprung

The autumn afternoon sunlight filtered through the golden leaves of the oak trees lining the central quad of Columbia University, casting long, peaceful shadows across the campus lawns.
Maya Lin walked briskly down the stone pathway, clutching her economics textbooks tightly against her chest, a small sense of peace finally settling into her mind for the first time in years.
With her family’s crippling debts completely cleared by Viktor’s unexpected intervention, the crushing weight of survival had finally lifted off her shoulders, allowing her to breathe freely.
As she approached the wrought-iron gates leading out to the bustling city street, a sleek, dark cargo van quietly pulled up to the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the afternoon traffic.
Maya didn’t think anything of it, assuming it was just another delivery vehicle dropping off packages for the university bookstore or administrative offices.
Then the side sliding door of the van flew open with a sharp screech, and two burly men wearing dark hoodies leaped out onto the pavement with terrifying speed.
Before Maya could scream or turn to run, one of the men grabbed her roughly from behind, clamping a heavy chemical-soaked cloth firmly across her mouth and nose.
She thrashed violently, dropping her heavy textbooks onto the concrete as her vision began to blur and spin violently from the suffocating fumes of the chloroform rag.
“Got her! Grab her legs and get her in the van before someone notices!” the lead abductor hissed urgently to his accomplice.
Within three seconds, Maya’s struggling body went completely limp, her consciousness fading away into absolute darkness as they hauled her into the back of the cargo van.
The sliding door slammed shut with a heavy metallic thud, and the van accelerated aggressively away from the curb, blending seamlessly into the chaotic downtown Manhattan traffic.
Unbeknownst to the kidnappers, parked two hundred yards away across the street was a quiet, unassuming black sedan operated by one of Commander Vance’s elite intelligence spotters.
The operative immediately lifted his encrypted satellite comms device, pressing the earpiece tightly against his ear as he watched the cargo van speed away.
“Command, this is Spotter Three. We have an active code-red situation on the Columbia campus. Target Maya Lin has just been abducted by unknown hostiles in a black transit van,” the operative reported urgently.
Inside the private underground command bunker beneath Viktor’s downtown headquarters, the communication monitor instantly flashed bright red.
Viktor Vance stood before the massive tactical wall display, his rugged face turning instantly to cold, murderous stone at the sound of the report.
“Trace that van’s trajectory through every traffic camera and toll plaza in the tri-state area,” Viktor commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal, terrifying register.
“Already on it, boss. Traffic feeds show they’re heading south toward the abandoned shipping warehouses along the Hudson River,” Kaelen reported rapidly, tapping keys on the main terminal.
Viktor reached down to the heavy walnut weapons cabinet beside his desk, pulled out a custom-engraved 1911 pistol, and checked the magazine with a sharp, mechanical click.
“Mobilize the tactical response teams,” Viktor ordered, his dark eyes burning with the unquenchable fire of an apex predator whose territory had been violated.
