Chapter 4 - Twenty Minutes of False Luxury Behind Closed Doors

From my vantage point across the street, I didn't move a muscle. I simply checked the digital dashboard clock on my rental car's console and started a mental countdown. Twenty minutes. I decided to give them precisely twenty minutes to settle into their glorious illusion of ownership before reality came crashing down. Through the expansive, floor-to-ceiling ocean-facing windows, I watched the living tableau of my family's supreme ignorance play out in silent, vivid detail. Linda was already spinning in circles through my expansive, open-concept living room, her phone held high in selfie mode, capturing every corner of the custom interior design I had meticulously planned down to the last throw pillow. Marcus had already made himself completely at home behind my gleaming white marble kitchen island, aggressively popping open bottles of craft beer and lining them up on the pristine stone surface without a single coaster in sight, completely ignoring the strict rules I had established for the property. My mother stood planted squarely in the center of the grand foyer, one hand planted firmly on her hip, acting as a tyrannical drill sergeant as she pointed at various guest rooms, directing everyone where to dump their designer luggage. She raised her voice, warning them not to scuff the imported hardwood paint I had personally selected, not to let condensation drip onto the custom floors I had paid for with my own hard-earned sweat and capital, and not to touch certain decorative art pieces as if she were the gracious, long-suffering hostess of an estate she had never earned, never funded, and never dreamed of owning on her own merit. I watched them open my refrigerator, raid my custom pantry, pour expensive drinks into my crystal glassware, and step out onto my teakwood deck to pose for photos with the Atlantic Ocean crashing in the background. They were feeling richer, happier, and more superior than they had ever felt in their lives, basking in the reflected glow of stolen luxury, entirely unaware that the clock was ticking down every single second of their stolen paradise.
