Chapter 8 - The Desperate Bluff and the Crumbling Facade of Authority

For three full seconds, the only sound on the porch was the rhythmic crashing of the Atlantic waves against the distant shoreline and the hollow ticking of the smart lock’s internal circuit board. Then my brother Marcus stepped forward, trying to salvage his shattered alpha-male ego by puffing out his chest and flashing a bright, aggressively friendly smile that didn't reach his terrified eyes. "Look, officer, there's been a massive miscommunication here," Marcus said, his voice dropping into that condescending, boardroom-executive tone he always used when he was trying to bully a subordinate into submission. "We are the immediate family of the primary stakeholder, and we have full authorization to be utilizing this facility for our annual family summit. My mother here entered the security code—a code provided directly to us by family channels—and we’ve spent a considerable amount of money stocking this place for the weekend. So if some hyper-sensitive neighbor called in a noise complaint or a false trespassing alarm because they're jealous of our vehicles, you can just jot down my name, file your little report, and be on your way before we decide to report you for harassment." Deputy Thomas didn't blink an eye at the manufactured bravado. He simply reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a laminated copy of the official county property deed along with the certified articles of incorporation for my LLC, and held them up at eye level. "That's fascinating, sir," the deputy replied, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm. "Because according to the county assessor's database, the sole registered owner, corporate director, and legal titleholder of this specific parcel—parcel number 88-402-B, commonly known as Ocean Crest Villa—is an individual by the legal name of Victoria Vance. And as of fourteen minutes ago, Victoria Vance has filed an active, Level-1 criminal trespassing complaint against every single unauthorized body currently standing inside her dwelling. So I'm going to ask you one more time, very slowly: which one of you possesses the legal deed, the lease agreement, or written authorization from Ms. Vance to occupy this property?" The color drained so fast from my mother’s face that she looked like a ghost carved out of old marble, her hands trembling violently as she dropped her oversized straw hat onto the wooden floorboards, where it rolled ignominiously into a corner.
