Chapter 5 - The Silent Call That Triggered the Final Countdown

As the digital clock on my dashboard ticked past the eighteen-minute mark, I reached calmly into my jacket pocket, pulled out my secondary burner phone, and dialed a direct, pre-saved local number with absolute precision. The call connected on the second ring, answered by a deep, gravelly voice belonging to Sheriff Miller’s senior deputy, a man who knew the coastal zoning laws and property boundaries of this county better than anyone else alive. There was no need for dramatic pleasantries or lengthy explanations; we had established our protocol days ago when I first noticed the family group chat plotting their unauthorized getaway invasion. "They're in," I said quietly into the receiver, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of emotion. "They've breached the perimeter, bypassed the smart lock using the override code, and they are currently consuming alcohol, staging luggage, and filming social media content inside the primary residence at 404 Ocean Crest Drive." On the other end of the line, the deputy let out a short, dry chuckle that sounded like gravel grinding together. "Copy that, Ms. Vance," he replied, his tone laced with professional amusement and unwavering authority. "We're stationed about two minutes out down the dune access road. All documentation, including the deed, the LLC articles of incorporation, the trespass notices, and the formal cease-and-desist declarations you filed yesterday morning, are currently locked into the mobile terminal. We're rolling up right now. Shall we clear the premises immediately, or would you prefer to be present for the initial contact?" I looked back across the road, watching my sister Linda take another sip of wine from one of my favorite crystal glasses while posing dramatically against the balcony railing. A cold, sardonic smile touched the corners of my lips as I shifted the rental car into gear. "Start rolling the cruiser up the shell driveway right now, Deputy," I murmured softly, cutting off the call before he could answer. "Let's go show them who really owns the coastline."
