Chapter 9 - The Arrival of the Real Landlord and the Gaslighting Collapse

Before Marcus could stammer out another desperate lie or my mother could launch into her signature screeching defense mechanism, the crunch of tires echoed from the edge of the shell driveway once more. All heads snapped toward the road in unison, expecting perhaps a backup unit or another bewildered family member, but instead watched my anonymous silver rental car glide smoothly up the drive, cutting its engine with a quiet, efficient purp. I pushed the driver's side door open, stepped out into the blinding Georgia sunlight wearing a crisp, tailored linen blazer and dark aviator sunglasses, and began walking toward the front porch with the slow, unbothered grace of someone who owned the very ground beneath her feet. Every jaw on that porch dropped so low it practically hit the floorboards. Linda let out a choked, breathless gasp, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as if she were staring back at a terrifying ghost rising from the grave. "Vicky?" my mother whispered, her voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched squeak of utter disbelief and mounting horror. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get this address? Did you follow us? Have you completely lost your mind?" I didn't break stride. I walked right up the stone steps, stopped two feet away from the threshold, casually slipped off my sunglasses, and looked them all dead in the eye with a terrifying, razor-sharp smile. "Follow you?" I echoed, my voice ringing out clear, cold, and utterly dominant across the quiet ocean breeze. "Mother, please. You don't even know what county you're standing in, let alone who pays the property taxes. This isn't a family reunion venue, and you certainly aren't guests of honor. You are currently trespassing on private commercial property owned exclusively by my holding company. And since you were kind enough to formally and publicly ban me from your little family group chat this afternoon, I figured it was only fair to return the favor by banning you from my beach house."
