Chapter 12 - The Ambassador's Ultimatum

The heavy oak doors of the private drawing room swung open, revealing Ambassador Robert Vance standing in the center of the Persian rug.

He was a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate charcoal Savile Row suit, carrying himself with the arrogant posture of international diplomacy.

Two federal marshals stood silently at attention by the double doors, their uniforms crisp and authoritative.

Richard stood near the fireplace, his broad shoulders squared, while Emily remained standing protectively just behind the sofa where the three boys were huddled together.

"Richard, it has been far too long," Ambassador Vance said, his voice smooth, deep, and dripping with patronizing condescension.

"I only wish my return to American soil were under more pleasant circumstances."

"Cut the diplomatic pleasantries, Robert," Richard replied coldly, his hands resting flat against the marble mantelpiece.

"You didn't fly halfway across the globe out of familial concern for my children."

"Watch your tone, Richard," Robert retorted, a thin smile touching his lips as he adjusted his gold-rimmed cufflinks.

"As the senior surviving male relative of the late Clara Vance-Carter, I hold legal standing that even your high-priced corporate lawyers cannot easily brush aside."

"Julian and Victoria were fools, yes. Their greed blinded them."

"But their legal maneuvers triggered an automatic family trust review."

Robert pulled a thick leather-bound dossier from his briefcase and tossed it onto the coffee table with a dull thud.

"According to the original Vance family charter drafted by Clara and Julian's father, any primary maternal blood relative retains the right to audit the physical and emotional welfare of surviving heirs in the event of severe household instability."

"And an estate where the primary caretaker was arrested for domestic violence and the father was completely oblivious to it... qualifies as severe instability."

Emily stepped out from behind the sofa, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.

"You don't give a damn about the boys' welfare, Robert."

"You want access to Clara's private cryptographic patents buried in the Hawthorne core servers—patents that Julian failed to steal before his arrest."

Ambassador Vance turned his gaze toward Emily, his eyes flashing with sudden, venomous recognition.

"Ah. The runaway sister."

"Clara always was the sentimental weakling of the family, and you inherited her pathetic martyr complex."

"Dressed up in a housekeeper's uniform, hiding in plain sight like a frightened mouse."

"The courts in Geneva will find it fascinating that an unregistered architect was living under an assumed domestic title inside her late sister's home."

"Let's see how a family court judge views your fitness as a permanent maternal guardian."

Richard moved so fast that he crossed the ten-foot gap between the fireplace and the coffee table in a single breath.

He grabbed Ambassador Vance by the lapels of his Savile Row suit, lifting him half an inch off the floor with terrifying strength.

"Listen to me very carefully, Robert," Richard whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, suppressed fury that made the federal marshals instantly reach for their holstered sidearms.

"If you ever step foot on my property again—if you ever so much as look in the direction of my sons or my wife—I will personally dismantle your diplomatic immunity, strip your offshore accounts down to the last cent, and feed you to the federal prosecutors."

"You have thirty seconds to walk out those front doors before I forget I am a civilized man."
