Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Mask

A heavy silence descended over the wide boulevard, broken only by the distant hum of a lawnmower two blocks away.

Richard remained frozen on the pavement, his billion-dollar intellect completely paralyzed by his son’s single, devastating sentence.

Liam had not spoken directly to him since Clara’s funeral three years ago.

And now, his son's first words to his father were an indictment of pure neglect and betrayal.

Before Richard could speak, the smooth electric hum of a luxury golf cart approached rapidly from the estate’s driveway.

Victoria Lane stepped off the vehicle before it had even come to a full stop.

She was wearing a pristine ivory cashmere sweater and cream silk trousers, her blonde hair falling in immaculate waves over her shoulders.

She looked like the picture of an aristocratic saint in distress.

"Richard! Oh, thank God you caught them!" Victoria cried out, holding a lace handkerchief to her eyes.

"I was terrified they would run out into the main highway traffic!"

She rushed toward the group, her arms outstretched toward Liam with exaggerated affection.

"Come here to Mommy Victoria, sweet boy, let me clean that terrible blood off your little hands," she cooed.

The moment Victoria took a step closer, all three boys began screaming in unison.

Liam began Hyperventilating, digging his tiny fingernails into Emily’s shoulders so hard that they pierced the navy cloth.

"STAY AWAY FROM US!" Ethan screamed, kicking his bare, bleeding heels wildly into the air.

Emily stood up slowly, lifting Liam securely in her arms while shielding Ethan and Noah behind her legs with her yellow-gloved hands.

She stood like an unbreakable fortress between the billionaire’s children and the woman he was about to marry.

"Do not take another step toward these children, Miss Lane," Emily said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, absolute steel.

Victoria stopped, her glossy lips curling into a momentary, involuntary sneer before she remembered Richard was watching.

"Emily, you insolent girl, how dare you use that tone with me?" Victoria protested, her eyes welling with instant, theatrical tears.

"Richard, do you see how she is manipulating your sons against me?"

"She has clearly poisoned their innocent minds because she is bitter about being caught stealing your watch!"

"The boys were throwing an unmanageable tantrum because their favorite maid was dismissed."

"They threw a vase at the sunroom mirror and cut themselves in their rage!"

"I tried to comfort them, but they attacked me and ran away like wild animals!"

Victoria turned to Richard, placing a delicate hand on his rigid shoulder.

"Darling, look at them. They are hysterical and completely out of control."

"We must call the private clinic immediately and have them sedated and treated by professionals."

"And this thieving woman must be arrested for trespassing and kidnapping right this instant!"

Richard stood up slowly from the pavement.

He did not look at Victoria's outstretched hand.

Instead, his gaze dropped to Victoria's right wrist.

Beneath the sleeve of her cream cashmere sweater, peeking out just above her gold Cartier bracelet, were three distinct, fresh scratches.

They were thin, sharp scratches made by the frantic fingernails of a frightened child fighting for breath.

Richard’s voice sounded dangerously calm when he finally spoke.

"Victoria."

"Yes, my love?" she replied, flashing her most comforting, devoted smile.

"You told me earlier that the nursery and hallway security cameras were offline for their monthly cloud server maintenance."

Victoria's smile twitched slightly, a microscopic flicker of anxiety crossing her pale blue eyes.

"Yes, darling, the IT company said the entire western wing backup was down until tonight."

Richard’s eyes narrowed into slits of dark obsidian.

"The Hawthorne home security system does not run on third-party cloud servers."

"It runs on my company's proprietary closed-loop quantum neural network."

"It does not have 'monthly maintenance windows,' and it never goes offline unless someone manually inserts a master encryption key."

Victoria took an involuntary half-step backward, her manicured fingers tightening around her silk handkerchief.

"Richard... you know I don't understand your complicated computer jargon..."

"Only two people in this world possess the master physical encryption key to this estate," Richard said, stepping forward until he loomed over her.

"I hold the primary key."

"And I gave the emergency backup key to you last Friday when we announced our engagement."

Victoria’s throat visibly bobbed as she struggled to swallow.

"Richard, you cannot possibly believe the wild babbling of three traumatized children over your future wife!"

Richard did not answer her.

He turned his gaze toward Emily, who was gently brushing the matted hair from Liam’s damp forehead.

"Emily," Richard said, his voice cracking with a shame so profound it made him physically bow his head.

"Bring my sons back inside the house."

"We are calling Dr. Marcus, and we are opening the master server logs."
