Chapter 13 - The Trap Beneath The Surface

Ambassador Vance did not panic.
Instead, a cold, calculated smirk spread across his aging face as he looked down at Richard’s clenched fists.
"Threaten me all you want, Richard," Robert wheezed smoothly, adjusting his lapels once Richard finally released him.
"But you're fighting a shadow."
"The papers have already been filed with the Hague."
"If you do not voluntarily surrender the children to my custody within forty-eight hours for a 'neutral psychological evaluation in Switzerland,' the international arrest warrants for child endangerment and corporate manipulation will be reactivated against Emily."
"After all... she legally abandoned her professional identity five years ago under a falsified registry."
"In international law, that constitutes identity fraud and corporate espionage against a foreign national entity."
With those final, venomous words, Ambassador Vance turned on his heel, signaling the federal marshals to follow.
"Good day, gentlemen," Robert murmured smoothly as he walked out of the drawing room, leaving the heavy silence behind him like a physical weight.
The doors clicked shut.
Emily walked slowly over to the window, watching Robert’s sleek black limousine glide down the private driveway toward the security gates.
Her face was pale, but her eyes burned with fierce determination.
"He's bluffing about the international warrants," Emily said quietly, resting her hands against the cool glass.
"Geneva law requires direct physical signature verification from a primary blood relative to activate an extradition clause."
"Julian and Victoria are in federal lockup; they can't sign anything."
"It's not a bluff," Richard said grimly, walking over to stand beside her.
"Robert has been buying off Swiss magistrates for years through shell companies."
"If he files an emergency injunction through the international court, even my legal team will need seventy-two hours to get an emergency stay."
"And during those seventy-two hours... he could use a court-ordered evaluation to separate the boys from us."
Ethan, Noah, and Liam walked quietly into the drawing room, sensing the heavy tension in the air.
Ethan tugged gently on Emily’s skirt, his hazel eyes wide with worry.
"Is the bad silver-haired man going to take us away, Miss Emily?" Ethan asked, his voice trembling slightly.
Emily knelt down immediately, wrapping her arms around all three boys and pulling them close against her chest.
"Nobody is taking you anywhere, my little knights," Emily promised fiercely, her voice steady and unyielding.
"Never."
Richard watched them, his chest aching with a profound, protective love.
He realized something vital.
Robert Vance wasn't acting alone.
No diplomat of Robert's caliber would launch a high-risk international custody battle without a powerful financial backer underwriting the legal fees.
Julian and Victoria were broke, their assets frozen by federal order.
So who was financing Robert's campaign?
"Miller," Richard said into his encrypted lapel comms, pressing the activation button.
"Sir?" Miller's voice replied instantly.
"Run a full forensic audit on Robert Vance's private Swiss accounts from the last forty-eight hours."
"Find out who wired three million dollars into his offshore holding company this morning."
Ten minutes later, Miller's voice came back over the comms, laced with unmistakable shock.
"Mr. Hawthorne... you're not going to believe this."

"The wire transfer didn't come from a European bank."
"It came from Quantum Grid Technologies—our primary Silicon Valley competitor, headed by your former university rival, Marcus Thorne."
