Chapter 10 - The Federal Injunction and the Midnight Summons

The word injunction hung in the air of the warm, book-lined living room like a sudden gust of arctic wind.

Adrian stood up so abruptly that the small coffee table wobbled, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor.

His face had hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated ice, his blue eyes flashing with a lethal intensity that made the hairs on the back of my arms stand up.

"Stay here," Adrian commanded, his voice dropping into a low, non-negotiable register as he strode toward the foyer where the intercom panel was installed.

"Adrian, wait," I said, struggling to lift my heavy, eight-month pregnant body off the plush velvet sofa. "If it's from the family court regarding my custody or the divorce proceedings, I need to see it. You can't shield me from every piece of paper that comes through the door."

Adrian turned around in two long strides, gently pressing his hands against my shoulders to guide me back down onto the cushions.

"You are not moving an inch," he ordered softly, though the fierce warmth in his eyes softened the command. "Marcus is bringing the envelope up right now. Let me handle the dragon before you step out onto the battlefield."

A second later, the private elevator chimed, and Marcus stepped into the foyer holding a thick, heavy manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing the official stamp of the New York State Supreme Court.

He handed it directly to Adrian without a word, his posture rigid and alert.

Adrian sliced the top open with his thumb, pulling out a multi-page legal document covered in dense paragraphs of legalese.

His eyes scanned the pages rapidly, the muscles in his jaw ticking rhythmically with every line he read.

When he reached the final page, a dark, dangerous laugh escaped his throat—a sound devoid of any humor whatsoever.

"What is it, Adrian?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs as I gripped the edge of the sofa cushion. "What does it say?"

Adrian walked over, kneeling down in front of the sofa so that his eyes were level with mine, holding out the heavy document.

"It’s an emergency ex-parte motion filed by Julian’s lead corporate counsel," Adrian explained, his voice dangerously smooth. "They are petitioning the family court for an immediate psychological evaluation and temporary guardianship review of you, Clara, under the pretense that you were an 'abandoned, financially unstable fugitive' who might pose a flight risk with a Whitmore heir."

My breath caught in my throat, a wave of hot, suffocating panic rising from my chest.

"They want to take my baby away?" I whispered, my voice trembling violently as tears of sheer frustration and maternal terror pricked the backs of my eyes. "They're trying to paint me as an unfit mother just to get control of the trust?"

"They are trying to play dirty because they know they've already lost the corporate vote," Adrian answered, his hand reaching out to cup my cheek, wiping away a stray tear with his thumb. "Julian thinks that by threatening you with a custody challenge, he can force me to step down as CEO in exchange for dropping the suit."

"And will it work?" I asked, looking deep into his stormy blue eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation. "Would you really step down for us?"

Adrian didn't hesitate for a single microsecond.

"I would burn Whitmore Holdings to the ground, liquidate every asset I own, and live out of a tent in Central Park before I let anyone separate you from our child," Adrian said, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying conviction. "My empire was built with my own hands, Clara, but it is entirely worthless without you and our son."

I stared at him, the last lingering doubts of the past eight months dissolving into ash.

The man sitting in front of me wasn't the cold corporate titan who prioritized balance sheets over human lives; he was a man fiercely protective of his family, ready to wage war against the entire world.

"Then we don't back down," I said, my voice steadying as a fierce, defensive heat surged through my veins. "If Julian wants a war in family court tomorrow morning, we give him one he'll never forget."

May you like

Adrian smiled—a rare, brilliant, and utterly lethal expression that made him look like the undisputed king of Manhattan.

"That's my wife," Adrian murmured, leaning forward to press a tender, lingering kiss to my lips. "Now, drink your water, eat your soup, and get some sleep. Because tomorrow, we dismantle my uncle's empire piece by piece."
