Chapter 5 - The Descent into the City and the Promise of a New War

The private express elevator doors slid shut behind us, cutting off the stunned, sputtering protests of Julian Whitmore and his terrified shareholders like a guillotine blade dropping.
As the digital display on the wall began its rapid, weightless descent from the forty-second floor down toward the subterranean parking garage, the tension inside the glass cage shifted from explosive corporate warfare to an intimate, breathless quiet.
Adrian did not let go of my hand.
His fingers remained locked around mine, his grip firm, grounding, and possessive, as if he were terrified that if he loosened his hold for even a fraction of a second, I would dissolve back into the New York smog and disappear forever.
"You didn't have to announce the pregnancy to them like that," I murmured, staring at the blurred lights flashing past the elevator glass as we plummeted downward through the core of the skyscraper. "You just painted a massive target on our unborn child's back. Julian and his faction will stop at nothing to undermine us now."
Adrian turned his head, his stormy blue eyes softening as he looked down at me, free of the corporate armor he had worn upstairs.
"Let them try," Adrian said, his voice laced with a lethal, absolute certainty that sent a shiver down my spine. "Julian thinks he can control the board because he's spent the last five years cozying up to the secondary investors while I was busy expanding the global portfolio. But he forgot one fundamental rule about the Whitmore empire: I built the foundation, and I hold the keys to every single vault."
He stepped closer, closing the small physical distance between us until the front of his charcoal suit brushed lightly against my swollen stomach.
With a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the ruthless menace in his voice, Adrian reached out with his free hand, resting his palm flat against my dress right over our son.
"I spent eight months burning in hell because I thought I had lost you, Clara," Adrian whispered, his forehead coming down to rest gently against mine, his breath mingling with mine in the enclosed space. "I am never letting you walk out of my life again. Not for Queens, not for pride, and certainly not for my uncle."
"We have a lot of things to talk about, Adrian," I replied, my voice wavering slightly under the crushing weight of his gaze. "A lot of lies we told each other, and a lot of distance we have to cross before we can pretend we're a family."
"I know," he answered softly. "And we have all the time in the world to fix every single piece of it. Starting tonight."
The elevator chimed softly, slowing its descent before coming to a complete, smooth stop in the private underground parking level reserved exclusively for the CEO.

The heavy doors glided open to reveal Adrian’s black armored Maybach idling near the exit, with his head of security standing beside the open rear door holding an umbrella against the misty Manhattan drizzle outside.
Adrian didn't hesitate.
