Chapter 18 - The Visitor from the Shadows and the Unfinished Dossier

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of Adrian’s private office swung open, and Marcus ushered in a woman whose appearance struck an immediate chord of dissonance in the ultra-luxurious corporate suite.

She was in her late fifties, with steel-gray hair pulled back into a severe bun, wearing a faded wool trench coat that looked entirely out of place against the backdrop of imported Italian leather and designer minimalism.

Her sharp, cynical eyes swept across the room, lingering only for a second on the framed photograph of Lex on the desk before locking directly onto Adrian’s cold, unblinking blue eyes.

"You must be the billionaire husband who let his pregnant wife slip through his fingers into a rat-infested Queens basement," the woman said without an ounce of hesitation, her voice raspy, weathered, and entirely devoid of corporate deference.

Adrian did not stand up. He did not offer her a seat.

He simply rested his forearms on the mahogany desk, interlocking his fingers, his posture radiating a quiet, apex-predator menace that made Marcus instinctively shift his weight near the door.

"You have thirty seconds to state your name, your purpose, and why my head of security allowed you past the lobby before I have you physically removed and permanently barred from every commercial building in Manhattan," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper.

The woman didn't flinch. Instead, she reached into the deep pocket of her worn trench coat and pulled out a thick, manila folder tied with a faded red ribbon, slamming it down hard onto the center of Adrian’s pristine desk.

"My name is Beatrice Thorne," she said coolly, pulling out the chair opposite him and sitting down uninvited. "And I’m the woman who shredded the original surveillance logs from the legal clinic where Clara filed her initial separation papers eight months ago."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits.

"You," he whispered, the memory of the elusive entity that had shielded my secret in Queens suddenly flashing into focus. "Marcus’s cousin said someone inside the clinic covered her tracks. That was you."

"It was me," Beatrice admitted, leaning back and crossing her legs. "Not out of the goodness of my heart, Mr. Whitmore. I did it because Julian Whitmore’s private investigators were sniffing around that clinic like starving wolves, and I have loathed Julian and his corporate vultures since the day he ruined my late husband’s firm thirty years ago."

Adrian stared at the folder on his desk, his hand hovering inches away from the red ribbon.

"Why come to me now?" Adrian asked suspiciously. "Julian is broken, exiled in Switzerland, and his voting shares have been liquidated. The war is over."

"The war you know about is over," Beatrice corrected sharply, her cynical eyes glinting with dark warning. "Julian was just the loud, obnoxious front man. But while you were busy fighting him in family court, someone else was quietly buying up the distressed debt of the legal aid clinic where Clara sought refuge."

She leaned forward, dropping her voice to a harsh whisper.

"Someone who knows about the child. Someone who wants to use Clara’s past life before she met you to prove she signed away her independent assets under duress—thereby invalidating the entire family trust structure before your son’s first birthday."

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

The absolute silence in the office was deafening as the true magnitude of the new threat began to settle over him like a suffocating shroud.
