Chapter 4 - The Vultures at the Gates and the Legacy of the Whitmores

The heavy mahogany door clicked as Adrian disengaged the deadbolt, but before he pulled it open, he turned back to look at me, his hand lingering for one final second on my swollen stomach.

"Stay behind me," Adrian instructed, his voice low, steady, and carrying the cold, absolute authority of a man who owned the very ground beneath the skyscraper. "Whatever happens out there, let me handle my family. They smell blood in the water, but they don't know who they're dealing with today."

I nodded slowly, my hand sliding down to rest protectively over my abdomen as the adrenaline surged back into my veins, sharpening my senses.

When Adrian pulled the door open, the sterile executive hallway was no longer quiet; it was buzzing with a tense, predatory energy that felt thick enough to choke on.

Standing near the reception desk was Julian Whitmore, Adrian’s uncle—a tall, silver-haired vulture of a man clad in a pristine custom Brioni suit, flanked by three aging shareholders whose faces wore identical expressions of corporate entitlement and malicious curiosity.

Mr. Henderson was hovering near the edge of the reception station, looking like a man trapped between an oncoming freight train and a firing squad.

"Well, well, well," Julian drawled, his voice oily and dripping with condescension as he stepped forward, his sharp eyes flicking past Adrian’s broad shoulders to land directly on me standing inside the doorway. "Is this the infamous runaway bride? I thought you tossed her out months ago, nephew. Or did the charity case come back to beg for a larger settlement before the quarterly earnings report drops?"

The air in the hallway plummeted to absolute zero.

Adrian didn't flinch, didn't raise his voice, and didn't blink, but the sudden, terrifying drop in his posture made the three older shareholders visibly recoil a step backward.

"Watch your tongue, Julian," Adrian replied, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper that echoed off the marble floors. "You are standing on Whitmore property, addressing my wife."

"Your wife?" Julian laughed, a harsh, grating sound that drew the nervous attention of every silent assistant hiding behind their glass partitions. "The papers were supposed to be signed ten minutes ago. The board voted yesterday to classify this marriage as a failed liability. Whitmore Holdings doesn't need a charity case from Queens holding up our merger with the Asian conglomerates."

Julian’s eyes dropped downward, tracking the line of my thrift-store dress, stopping dead on my prominent, eight-month pregnant stomach.

For a split second, Julian’s triumphant smirk faltered, his eyebrows shooting up toward his hairline as his brain struggled to process the biological reality standing right in front of him.

"Good God," Julian whispered, the color draining from his sallow cheeks. "She's... she's pregnant."

"She is carrying my legitimate heir," Adrian corrected him, stepping forward to completely block Julian’s line of sight to me, his broad shoulders forming an impenetrable wall of protection. "Which means under clause twelve of the founding charter, my son inherits a controlling twenty-five percent voting bloc of this company the second he draws his first breath."

The three shareholders behind Julian erupted into immediate, panicked murmurs, their faces turning pale as the mathematical implications of Adrian’s words hit them like a tidal wave.

"You can't do that!" one of the shareholders stammered, stepping forward with a trembling finger raised. "An unborn child cannot hold voting rights! This is a stunt—a fabricated claim to bypass the board's authority and save your failing marriage!"

Adrian turned his head slightly, his blue eyes flashing with cold, unadulterated contempt.

"Try me," Adrian whispered, stepping closer to Julian until the older man was forced to tilt his chin upward to maintain eye contact. "Call a board meeting for tomorrow morning. Bring every lawyer, every auditor, and every disgruntled shareholder you can find. Let's see how many of you survive the forensic audit I'm about to unleash on your personal accounts."

Julian’s jaw worked silently, his face turning a mottled shade of purple as he realized he had walked straight into a trap of his own making.

May you like

Before Julian could sputter a response, Adrian reached back, his strong, warm fingers wrapping firmly around my cold hand, pulling me forward out of the conference room and right into the center of the hostile storm.

"Come, Clara," Adrian said softly, his thumb rubbing soothingly over my knuckles as he led me past the stunned faces of his corporate enemies toward the private express elevator. "It's time to take you home."
