Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the Sterling Manor was said to be worth more than a small island, but to Elena, it only looked like a beautifully intricate prison. She sat by the towering French windows, her slender fingers resting on the cold metal rims of her wheelchair. Outside, the sprawling estate was bathed in the golden hour light, a pristine paradise that she had not walked upon in five long years. She was the heiress to the Vanderbilt fortune, a name that commanded respect, fear, and unimaginable wealth across the Eastern Seaboard. Yet, all that money could not buy her legs back. At least, that is what the doctors had told her.

"Elena, darling, are you ready for tonight?" The voice was smooth, polished, and devoid of any real warmth. Julian Sterling walked into the room, adjusting his diamond cufflinks. He was a man who looked like he was sculpted from ice—handsome, impeccably dressed in a tailored tuxedo, and relentlessly ambitious. He was the man her family had chosen for her. The man who had "saved" her after the tragic accident that took everything she loved. Elena forced a small, practiced smile. "I am just resting, Julian. The gala is going to be exhausting."

"It is our engagement announcement," Julian reminded her, his tone dropping into a subtle warning. "The entire city's elite will be there. The press. The board of directors. You need to look perfect." He walked over and placed a heavy, manicured hand on her shoulder. The touch made Elena's skin crawl, though she dared not show it. For five years, her memory of the accident had been a blurry fog. She only remembered the screeching tires, the rain, and the devastating news that the love of her life was dead. Since then, Julian and her family had kept her medicated, kept her confined, kept her safe in this golden cage. But lately, the fog in her mind was lifting. And deep down, a quiet, desperate voice kept whispering a single, undeniable truth: something was horribly wrong.
