Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Chalice

In the opulent powder room of the venue, Nurse Ratched—Julian's personally hired caretaker—handed Elena a small cup of water and two white pills. "Time for your medication, Miss Vanderbilt. We need to keep the nerve pain manageable for the evening," the nurse said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. Elena looked at the pills. For five years, she had taken them obediently. They made her feel heavy, docile, and numb from the waist down. But two weeks ago, she had accidentally dropped one and noticed how clear her head felt the next day. She began hiding them. Spitting them out when the nurse looked away.
"Thank you, Margaret," Elena said, bringing the cup to her lips. With a practiced sleight of hand, she palmed the pills and swallowed only the water, offering a weak smile. As the nurse turned away to pack her medical bag, Elena slipped the pills into her clutch. Her heart was racing. She was terrified. Over the past few days, the numbness in her legs had slowly begun to fade. It started as a faint tingling, then a dull ache, and now, a burning sensation. She wasn't paralyzed. The realization had hit her like a freight train. She was being drugged. Julian was keeping her in the chair to control her, to make her dependent, to ensure she could never run away. She didn't know how to fight back against a billionaire's empire, but she knew she had to survive tonight. She just needed a miracle.
