Chapter 12 - Shadows From The Past

Later that afternoon, while Sophie and Isabella were occupied in the glass atrium with the garden planting, Alessandro and Clara walked together along the quiet gravel path that led toward the estate's western perimeter gate.
The iron gates had been entirely replaced with modern, reinforced security panels, though the original stonework remained untouched, bearing the carved crest of the Romano family.
"The federal prosecutor's office called me about an hour ago," Alessandro said quietly, his gaze fixed on the rolling hills beyond the valley.
Clara stopped walking, turning her face toward him with a slight tightening in her chest.
"Did Julian try to appeal?"
"No," Alessandro answered, shaking his head.
"Julian isn't appealing anything."
"His defense lawyers dropped him this morning after discovering he tried to funnel remaining offshore accounts through dummy corporations while sitting in his holding cell."
"The judge added another ten years to his federal indictment for obstruction of justice and witness tampering."
"He will spend the rest of his natural life behind maximum-security bars in upstate New York."
Clara let out a slow, steady breath, watching her boots crush the small pebbles on the path.
"It feels strange," she confessed softly.
"For so long, that name—Vance—felt like a curse."
"Every time I heard it on the news or saw it on a legal document growing up in the foster system, I felt like I was carrying someone else's punishment."
"You were never carrying a punishment, Clara," Alessandro said, stopping and turning to face her fully.
"You were carrying a legacy that was stolen from you."
"Julian tried to bury your name, your sister, and your entire family history beneath seven years of ash and lies."
"But he miscalculated."
"He forgot that blood like yours doesn't burn away."
"It waits."
"It finds a way back through the smallest, most impossible cracks—like a three-year-old girl walking up to the most feared man in the mansion and handing him a silver anchor."
Clara looked up into his dark, steady eyes, a gentle smile touching her lips.
"You weren't so terrifying, you know," she murmured teasingly.
"Underneath all those custom suits and terrifying executive stares, you were just a lonely man sitting at a very long table eating cold steak by yourself."
Alessandro let out a low, rumbling chuckle that vibrated warmly in his chest.
"Only you would have the absolute fearlessness to walk into my dining room and call me out on my terrible dietary habits."
"I was a maid, remember?" Clara laughed softly.
"It was literally my job description to notice when the master of the house was starving his soul."
Alessandro reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing the contour of her jawline, lifting her chin so she had no choice but to meet his gaze.

"You stopped being a maid the moment you walked into my life, Clara Vance."
"And I am never letting you go."
