Chapter 6 - The Siege At The Iron Gates

The concussive blast of an explosion rocked the foundation of the manor, sending fine plaster dust drifting down from the concrete ceiling.
Sophie buried her face into Clara's neck, letting out a sharp, terrified cry as the basement lights flickered violently before switching to emergency amber.
"Hold her tight and get behind the reinforced counter," Alessandro commanded, his voice dropping into the icy, calculated cadence of a seasoned commander under fire.
He crossed the room in three strides, ripping open a concealed wall panel behind the medical cabinet.
Inside rested an array of tactical gear, ballistic vests, and automatic rifles that Clara had never imagined could exist inside a residential mansion.
Alessandro strapped a lightweight Kevlar vest over his dress shirt, tossing a second vest directly onto the examination table in front of Clara.
"Put that on her, then put one on yourself," he ordered without looking back.
Clara’s hands were shaking so severely she could barely slip the Velcro straps over Sophie's small torso.
"Who are these people?" Clara asked, her voice hitching on every syllable.
"Why are they shooting at us?"
"Julian Vance never leaves loose ends," Alessandro replied, racking the slide of an assault carbine with a sharp metallic clack.
"He realized his mistake the second I confronted him in the conservatory."
"He had a fail-safe team on standby just outside the valley road."
"If he goes down for Isabella's staged death and corporate fraud, he burns everything and everyone to ash."
The intercom on the wall crackled loudly, filled with the roar of sustained automatic gunfire and shattering glass.
"Alessandro! They’ve breached the main foyer!" Marco’s ragged voice shouted through the static.
"They're using flashbangs and suppressive fire!"
"We neutralized four, but they’ve got six more moving toward the lower access tunnels!"
"They’re cutting the estate's backup generators right now!"
Alessandro slammed his palm onto the intercom button.
"Fall back to the secure vault in Sub-level Two, Marco!"
"Do not hold the ground floor!"
"Lure them into the eastern wine cellar corridor and lock down Bulkhead Nine!"
"Understood, boss!" Marco yelled back before the connection cut out in a burst of white noise.
Alessandro turned to Dr. Evans, who had already retrieved an emergency medical trauma bag from the shelf.
"Evans, take Clara and Sophie through the laundry chute tunnel to the old coal cellar."
"It connects directly to the underground drainage canal that feeds into the Hudson River."
"There’s a reinforced boat dock half a mile downstream."
"No!" Clara cried out, clutching Sophie to her chest as she scrambled to her feet.
"I am not leaving you behind, and I am not walking blindly into the dark with a child!"
"You just told me I have family blood running through my veins!"
"You just told me my entire life was stolen by that monster Julian!"
Alessandro took two quick steps forward, gripping Clara firmly by both shoulders.
His dark eyes bore into hers with an intensity that silenced her rising hysteria.
"Listen to me, Clara," he said, his voice dropping to a low, fierce murmur.
"Seven years ago, I failed to protect the woman I loved because I wasn't there."
"I spent every single day since that fire wishing I had burned in that room instead of her."
"If Isabella survived, and if she sent Sophie to me with that charm, it means she trusted me to keep her sister and her niece alive."
"I am not letting Julian take another soul from this bloodline."
"Now take the child and run."
Sophie reached out with her small hand, touching the rough stubble on Alessandro’s jaw.
"Don't let the bad men hurt your bunny," she whispered softly, pointing down at the stuffed rabbit Clara had tucked into her pocket.
A shadow of a genuine, protective smile touched the corner of Alessandro's lips for the first time in Clara's memory.
"Nobody is hurting anyone today, little bird," Alessandro promised softly.
"Now go with the doctor."
Dr. Evans pushed open a heavy iron grate set into the floor of the utility closet, exposing a steep concrete staircase descending into pitch blackness.
Clara held Sophie firmly, stepping down into the cold subterranean passage while the roar of gunfire echoed down the elevator shaft above them.
Alessandro slammed the grate shut, bolted the steel latch from the outside, and turned toward the basement corridor with his weapon raised.

Upstairs, the sound of boots marching over broken glass signaled the arrival of Julian Vance’s private strike team.
Alessandro stepped into the shadows, his eyes burning with absolute, deadly resolve.
