Chapter 4 - The Trap In The Garden

Alessandro stood frozen amidst the dead vines, the parchment trembling violently in his grip.

The words burned into his retinas like raw phosphorus.

The child Clara holds is not a stranger's orphan.

Every rational defense he had constructed over seven years of bitter, unyielding grief crumbled in an instant.

He remembered the night of the fire with agonizing clarity.

He had been on a private jet flying from Frankfurt to JFK when the call came through from Julian Vance, Isabella's elder brother.

Julian had been hysterical on the satellite phone, screaming that the west wing was engulfed in flames and the firefighters couldn't reach the second floor.

By the time Alessandro's car had sped through the estate gates, the roof had already caved in.

Julian had met him at the perimeter, wrapping him in an embrace that felt genuine at the time, whispering that Isabella was gone and that her suffering had been brief.

Two days later, Julian presented dental identification reports signed by the Vance family's private coroner.

Because Alessandro was completely shattered, barely able to stand without heavy medication, Julian had assumed temporary stewardship of the joint shipping consortium that Isabella’s dowry had brought into the marriage.

Over the next seven years, that shipping consortium had become the financial backbone of the Vance Corporation's multi-billion-dollar empire.

And now, this paper claimed the entire foundation of his grief was an engineered lie.

A sudden crunch of gravel shattered the silence behind the conservatory.

Alessandro’s training took over instantly.

He spun around, drawing his weapon, leveling the barrel at the shadow moving through the rusted iron archway.

"Step out into the light, or I put three rounds through your chest," Alessandro barked, his voice dropping into pure ice.

A tall, lean figure stepped slowly from behind the dead cypress hedge, hands held high above his head.

It was not a ghost.

It was a man in his late forties wearing an expensive cashmere overcoat, his leather gloves raised in surrender.

Julian Vance.

His hair was silvered at the temples, his face polished with the ruthless poise of Manhattan’s elite, but his eyes were darting nervously across the courtyard.

"Lower the gun, Alessandro," Julian said, his breath fogging in the chill.

"It’s family."

"What are you doing on my property at dawn, Julian?" Alessandro demanded, his weapon not moving a single millimeter.

"The gate was locked."

"The security cables were cut twenty minutes ago."

Julian gave a tight, practiced chuckle that failed to reach his eyes.

"I have people who monitor the police bands and private security frequencies."

"When your estate’s silent panic alarm triggered twenty minutes ago, I thought I should drive up from Westchester myself."

"We are still business partners, remember?"

"My sister would have wanted me to make sure you hadn't finally lost your mind out here in this mausoleum."

Alessandro stepped forward, his eyes narrowing until they were like black flint.

"My panic alarm didn't trigger, Julian."

"My security cables were cut manually from the outside with industrial snips."

"Nobody outside this estate knew about an alarm because no alarm was sent."

Julian’s smile tightened, the warmth evaporating from his aristocratic features.

"You've always been paranoid, Alessandro."

"Seven years of brooding in this ruin has clearly rotted your perspective."

"I came to deliver the quarterly dividend reports for the transatlantic routes."

"At four-thirty in the morning?" Alessandro challenged, taking another step, the gun barrel now four feet from Julian’s chest.

"Through an abandoned garden where my wife died?"

Julian’s eyes flicked down to the dead rose branch where the envelope had been hanging just moments ago.

For a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine shock and fury crossed Julian’s face.

He had seen the missing gauze.

He knew the note was gone.

"Who told you to come here today, Julian?" Alessandro asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

"Did someone tell you that Isabella left something behind?"

Julian took a slow half-step back, his hands remaining in the air, but his jaw tightening.

"Isabella is dead, Alessandro."

"Her ashes are buried in our family vault at Green-Wood Cemetery."

"If you are finding trinkets and notes in the bushes, you are being played by con artists who know your weak spot."

"I heard a rumor you hired a new maid two years ago with a little girl."

"Desperate people do desperate things for money."

"They forge handwriting."

"They buy antique jewelry online to extract settlements from grieving billionaires."

Alessandro’s grip on the gun tightened until his knuckles turned pure white.

"I haven't mentioned a maid."

"I haven't mentioned a little girl."

"And I haven't mentioned finding any jewelry."

Julian froze.

He realized his fatal mistake in the very breath he took.

"Marco!" Alessandro roared.

From the edge of the terrace above, Marco appeared with two armed security officers, their carbines pointed directly at Julian Vance.

"Disarm him, search his vehicle, and hold him in the gatehouse," Alessandro ordered coldly.

"You have no legal right to detain me, Alessandro!" Julian yelled, struggling as Marco pinned his arms behind his back and stripped a snub-nosed revolver from his inner coat pocket.

"I am the chairman of Vance Maritime!"

"My lawyers will tear your security team apart before lunchtime!"

May you like

"Let them try," Alessandro said, turning his back on his brother-in-law.

"While they draft the paperwork, I am running a DNA test on every living soul inside this house."
