Chapter 1 - The Velvet Cage and the Falling Shards

The champagne glass hit me before I even registered the sound of breaking crystal.

One second, I was balancing a heavy silver tray beneath the amber chandeliers of Bellamy House, silently calculating whether the twenty-three dollars remaining in my checking account could survive until Friday.

The next second, a projectile shattered directly against my shoulder blade with the force of a small hammer.

Exploding shards of heavy crystal rained down around me like glittering shrapnel.

Somewhere to my left, a guest screamed in high-pitched terror.

A heavy mahogany chair scraped violently across the polished marble floor.

And directly in front of my station, a little boy completely froze in his tracks.

He couldn’t have been older than six years old, wearing a miniature custom navy suit that probably cost more than my entire annual rent.

He had dark, messy hair and huge, terrified brown eyes, clutching a tiny plastic dinosaur in his small fist like it was a shield.

Every wealthy socialite and politician in the room instinctively ducked or scrambled away from the flying debris.

He didn’t move an inch.

He simply stared up with wide, unblinking eyes as the glittering fragments of glass hurtled directly toward his face.

My survival instincts screamed at me to run, but my conscience shouted louder.

Without a single second of hesitation, I dropped my silver tray, lunged forward, and grabbed him around his small shoulders.

I twisted my entire body over his, curling into a protective human shell against the onslaught.

A second, much larger glass missile smashed directly into my unprotected back.

A white-hot wave of pain ripped across my shoulder blade as if a branding iron had touched my skin.

Something razor-sharp sliced a deep, jagged line down my forearm.

Then, a vicious triangular shard drove straight into my side, puncturing my flesh with brutal ease.

For half a heartbeat, shock numbed my nerves and I felt almost nothing at all.

Then, a terrifying surge of hot liquid began pouring rapidly beneath my cheap server’s uniform.

The little boy completely disappeared beneath my weight, sobbing softly into my collarbone.

And instantly, the entire five-hundred-person ballroom went dead silent.

It wasn't just a quiet room; it was a suffocating, absolute vacuum of sound.

It was the exact kind of terrifying silence that happens when two hundred wealthy, powerful people suddenly realize they are all at the mercy of the exact same dangerous man.

Heavy, measured footsteps echoed across the marble floor directly behind my back.

“Luca.”

The voice was dangerously low, perfectly controlled, yet laced with an arctic chill.

Yet, every single person in that lavish ballroom seemed to physically shrink and hold their breath when they heard that single word.

The child safely sheltered under my body suddenly came alive and squirmed upward.

“Papa!” I lifted my aching head, wincing against the blinding pain in my side.

A tall man in an impeccably tailored black suit was walking toward us through the parting crowd.

He was broad-shouldered, with dark hair neatly combed back from a face that looked as though it had been carved out of something much harder than bone.

A faint, pale scar cut cleanly across his left eyebrow, adding a menacing edge to his striking features.

His pristine white dress shirt was open at the throat, revealing intricate black ink tattoos crawling up along his muscular neck.

I didn’t need anyone to whisper his identity to me.

Everyone in Chicago, from the gutter to the penthouse suites, knew exactly who he was.

Damian Vescari.

He was a ruthless real estate developer, elite nightclub owner, and international shipping magnate whose empire spanned continents.

Depending on which newspaper or police report you chose to believe, he was either a brilliant visionary businessman or the most dangerous underworld kingpin who had never once been convicted of a crime.

Only twenty minutes earlier, I had politely served him a glass of imported sparkling water at table four.

He hadn’t even bothered to look at me twice, treating me like part of the mahogany furniture.

Now, he dropped down directly onto his polished Italian leather knees right beside me on the blood-stained floor.

“Luca,” he breathed again, his voice cracking with a rare, raw fracture of vulnerability.

“I’m okay, Papa,” the little boy whimpered, clutching my shirt.

Damian’s dark eyes frantically moved over every inch of his son’s body.

There was no blood, no visible injury, and no harm done to the heir of the Vescari dynasty.

Then, those terrifying, predator eyes slowly landed on me.

His expression shifted from paternal panic into something dark, calculating, and cold.

“Miss?” he demanded, his gaze locking onto my pale face.

“I’m... I’m fine,” I whispered, my teeth clenched against the agony.

I tried to push myself up off the marble floor.

It was a catastrophically bad decision.

The magnificent crystal chandeliers tilted violently overhead.

Something intensely warm and heavy flooded down my waist, soaking through my clothes.

Damian’s strong hand shot out and caught my shoulder firmly before I could collapse back onto the glass.

When he pulled his hand away, his fingers came away glistening bright red.

His eyes hardened into jagged black stones.

“You’re bleeding heavily.”

“It’s just... just glass,” I stammered, my vision beginning to blur at the edges.

A wealthy woman nearby gasped loudly in horror.

Someone in the panicked crowd whispered that an ambulance had already been dialed.

Damian didn’t look away from my face for a single second.

“What is your name?”

“Emma.”

“Emma what?”

“Emma Carter.”

His intense gaze dropped down toward my bleeding side, where my white uniform was rapidly turning crimson.

Then, without taking his eyes off me, he looked sharply over his shoulder.

“Marco.”

A thickset man built like a brick wall in a charcoal suit materialized instantly out of the shadows.

“Sir.”

“Close the massive iron doors.”

The ballroom instantly erupted into loud, frantic chaos.

“What is the meaning of this?” shouted a prominent city councilman near the bar.

“You can’t lock us in here, Vescari!” another protested.

“I have an international flight to catch in an hour!” screamed a terrified woman in a diamond-encrusted gown.

Damian didn’t even raise his voice above a conversational tone, yet his command cut through the uproar like a razor.

“No one leaves this building.”

Every single objection died instantly in their throats, choked off by sheer terror.

His dark eyes swept slowly toward the shattered glass and metal fragments scattered across the pristine floor.

“This was not a drunken accident,” he stated coldly.

My stomach clenched violently into a tight knot.

Until that exact moment, I had naively assumed some clumsy, intoxicated guest had simply dropped a champagne flute from the upper mezzanine.

But Damian was staring at the razor-sharp fracture patterns in the glass with frightening, predatory focus.

Then, his gaze slowly shifted upward toward the private VIP balcony overlooking the Bellamy House ballroom.

An open service door was swinging slowly and ominously on its heavy brass hinges.

“Find out who threw it,” Damian ordered quietly.

“Yes, sir,” Marco replied, already tapping a concealed earpiece.

“And find out why.”

In a blur of motion, Marco vanished into the milling crowd toward the service stairwells.

Little Luca finally crawled out from beneath my aching body and immediately grabbed my cold hand with both of his small palms.

“You saved me,” the boy whispered, tears welling in his big brown eyes.

I forced my lips to stretch into a weak, reassuring smile.

“You’re okay... that’s all that matters, buddy.”

His small fingers tightened around mine with surprising strength.

Damian stared down at our joined hands.

Something completely unreadable and dark flickered across his carved features.

Then, the edges of my vision turned pitch black.

“I think... I need to sit down,” I muttered weakly.

“You are already lying on the floor, Emma,” Damian said, his voice unusually steady.

I let out a breathless, weak laugh.

Or at least, I tried to.

The sound instantly dissolved into a sharp, choking gasp of agony.

Suddenly, Damian’s large, warm hand pressed firmly and directly against my bleeding side to stem the flow.

“Stay awake, Emma.”

“I’m trying... I’m so tired.”

“Look at me.”

His voice shifted, carrying an absolute authority that defied mortal limits.

For the very first time in his life, naked, unfiltered fear cracked through all of his icy control.

“Look at my eyes, Emma.”

I forced my heavy eyelids to flicker open.

I stared straight into those bottomless, dark brown eyes.

“Don’t you dare close your eyes on me.”

“I’m... I’m so cold.”

“No,” the word hit the air like a physical command and a desperate plea combined.

“Stay with me, Emma... I command you to stay.”

Heavy footsteps echoed as paramedics finally rushed through the barricaded ballroom doors with emergency gear.

Damian moved only enough to give them room to work, but his hand never left my side until the very last second.

Heavy medical scissors sliced cleanly through the expensive fabric of my ruined server’s uniform.

One paramedic shouted across the room that my blood pressure was dangerously bottoming out.

Another urgent voice yelled that they had to transport me to trauma surgery immediately.

Little Luca started crying loudly, calling out my name as they hoisted my dead weight onto a rolling stretcher.

As they rapidly wheeled me away toward the service exit, Luca broke free from his father’s grip and ran a few steps alongside me.

“Emma!” he sobbed.

I weakly raised my fingertips toward him.

Damian caught his son gently by the shoulders before the boy could follow us out into the ambulance bay.

Yet, Damian’s piercing eyes remained locked onto mine through the fading light.

Then, he turned his head slightly toward one of his remaining bodyguards.

His next words were spoken in a tone so chillingly calm that it frightened me far more than any angry shouting ever could.

“Get my car around front right now.”

“Boss? The police are arriving—”

“They can question me at the hospital.”

Then, Damian shifted his lethal gaze to another of his trusted men standing by the door.

“And listen to me very carefully.”

The entire chaotic ballroom seemed to freeze into total stillness once again.

“If Emma Carter survives tonight, she will never have to worry about money, rent, or survival for the rest of her natural life.”

My heart thudded weakly, fluttering like a trapped moth against my ribs.

The paramedic slammed the back doors of the ambulance shut, pushing the stretcher faster as we sped into the night.

But Damian wasn't finished delivering his verdict.

“And if she doesn't survive this night...”

His dark gaze lifted menacingly toward the empty balcony above.

“Find the person responsible for this, and bring their soul to me before I tear this city apart brick by brick.”

The heavy steel doors of the emergency trauma bay slammed shut, cutting off the rest of the world.

My last conscious memory was the faint echo of little Luca screaming my name through the sterile halls.

Then, the monitors flatlined into a long, continuous tone, and everything dissolved into absolute darkness.
