Chapter 8 - The Downfall of an Empire

Within two hours of our public appearance at Vescari Tower, the house of cards built by Marcus Sterling completely collapsed.

Federal agents, acting on the encrypted financial ledgers and wiretap transcripts provided by Vescari’s legal team, raided Sterling’s suburban mansion and downtown penthouse simultaneously.

By mid-afternoon, news outlets were broadcasting live footage of federal marshals hauling away boxes of offshore bank records, smuggled firearms, and encrypted communication devices linking Sterling directly to international mercenary syndicates.

Back at Vescari Manor, the heavy atmosphere of impending danger had finally lifted, replaced by a strange, quiet stillness.

I sat on the wide stone terrace overlooking Lake Michigan, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket.

The sun was beginning its slow descent below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of bruised purple, amber, and gold.

Soft footsteps approached from behind, and the familiar, intoxicating scent of dark sandalwood and cedar told me who it was before he even spoke.

“You’re sitting out here in the chilly lake breeze again,” Damian’s deep voice murmured gently.

He pulled a heavy wool jacket off his broad shoulders and draped it over mine without asking, sliding into the wicker chair right beside me.

“I’m fine, Damian,” I replied softly, using his first name for the very first time without feeling a flutter of intimidation.

“The doctors said fresh air is good for my recovery.”

Damian stared out at the rolling waves, his profile sharp against the fading light.

“Sterling is being transferred to a federal supermax prison tonight,” Damian said, his tone entirely devoid of triumph, sounding almost weary.

“His corporate assets have already been frozen, and the board members who took bribes from him are resigning in droves.”

I turned my head to look at him, noticing the faint exhaustion carved into the corners of his dark eyes.

“It’s over, isn’t it?” I asked quietly.

“The threat against Luca... it’s gone?”

Damian finally turned his gaze toward me, his dark eyes softening into something infinitely warm and tender.

“For now, yes,” he replied, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair away from my face.

“Sterling was the one who pulled the strings locally. With him locked away, my son is safe.”

He paused for a heartbeat, his calloused fingers lingering for a fraction of a second against my cheek before pulling back.

“And because of you, Emma, my entire family survived a war that could have torn us apart.”

A faint blush warmed my cheeks, forcing me to look back down at my teacup.

“I just did what any human being with a conscience would do, Damian.”

“No,” he corrected me softly, his voice dropping into an intimate register that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

“Most people choose to look away when danger strikes. You stepped directly into the fire.”

He leaned back in his chair, folding his hands across his knee.

“Arthur drafted the paperwork this morning regarding your new position.”

I blinked in surprise, turning my head back toward him.

“My... my new position? What are you talking about?”

“You don't need to work another shift as a waitress in this city ever again, Emma,” Damian said firmly, though a gentle smile played at the corner of his lips.

“However, my private foundation is expanding its community outreach programs across Illinois, and I need someone with your resilience, intelligence, and sharp instincts to head the executive oversight committee.”

I stared at him in utter disbelief, my jaw dropping slightly.

“You want to hire me to run a corporate foundation? Damian, I don't have a business degree! I barely survived paying my community college tuition!”

May you like

“You survived a professional assassination attempt and outsmarted a corrupt corporate board in less than a week,” Damian countered smoothly.

“I think you’ll manage a foundation just fine.”
