Chapter 9 - Firelight and Confessions

The dinner table at Vescari Manor that evening felt entirely different from the previous nights.

There was no heavy tension in the air, no armed guards standing anxiously by the doors, and no whispered phone calls about corporate assassinations.

Little Luca chattered excitedly throughout the meal, regaling us with detailed descriptions of a cardboard pirate ship he and Mrs. Gable had spent the afternoon building in the conservatory.

“And then the pirate captain had to jump off the plank to save his crew!” Luca declared dramatically, waving a chicken nugget in the air.

“Just like Emma jumped off the table to save me!”

Damian and I exchanged a warm, shared glance across the mahogany dining table, a silent understanding passing between us that needed no words.

After Luca was tucked safely into bed by his nanny, the sprawling manor grew wonderfully quiet.

I wandered downstairs toward the massive stone library, drawn by the warm, flickering glow of the wood-burning fireplace.

The room smelled of old leather, aged paper, and melting beeswax.

Before I could turn around to head back to my suite, the heavy library doors clicked shut behind me.

I turned and saw Damian standing in the shadows near the entrance, having shed his suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the dark ink crawling up his muscular skin.

“I thought you’d be resting,” Damian said softly, walking slowly toward me across the thick Persian rug.

“I couldn't sleep,” I admitted honestly, watching as he stopped just an arm's length away.

“My mind is still trying to catch up with everything that happened over the last few days.”

Damian stopped right in front of me, the heat radiating from his body chasing away the evening chill of the cavernous room.

“It’s a lot to process,” he murmured, his dark brown eyes searching my face with an intense, quiet hunger.

“From a waitress struggling to pay twenty-three dollars in rent to the woman who saved the Vescari legacy.”

“I never asked for any of this,” I whispered, though my voice lacked any real conviction.

“I know,” Damian replied gently, his hand reaching out to trace the delicate contour of my jawline with agonizing slowness.

“You asked for nothing, and yet you gave me everything that truly mattered.”

My breath hitched in my throat as his thumb brushed lightly against my lower lip.

The air between us suddenly grew thick, heavy, and electric, charged with days of unspoken tension, shared danger, and undeniable attraction.

“Damian...” I breathed out his name like a silent plea.

“Emma,” he answered, his voice dropping into a husky, hypnotic whisper.

He didn't give me time to pull away or protest.

His strong arms wrapped firmly around my waist, pulling my body flush against his chest with effortless grace.

When his lips finally met mine, the shock of it sent a blinding wave of heat rushing through every vein in my body.

It wasn't a gentle, tentative kiss; it was a hungry, desperate collision of two souls who had stared death in the face and survived.

I instinctively gripped the lapels of his shirt, pulling him closer as the world outside the heavy library walls completely vanished.

For the first time since the glass shattered at Bellamy House, I felt completely, perfectly safe.
