Chapter 15 - Crown of Glass and Steel

The black SUV didn't slow down; it rammed straight through the rear doors of the blockade vans with a deafening screech of crumpled metal and shattering glass.

Before the mercenaries surrounding the ambulance could even raise their weapons, Damian’s tactical team poured out of the vehicles like a disciplined storm.

The brief, violent firefight lasted less than thirty seconds.

When the smoke cleared, Julian Cross and his men were pinned face-down against the wet pavement in cuffs.

Damian didn't even look at the captured thugs.

He threw open the back doors of the medical transport, where little Luca was sitting wrapped in a thermal blanket, looking wide-eyed and startled by the noise, but completely unharmed.

“Papa!” Luca cried out, bursting into tears as he launched himself into Damian’s arms.

Damian caught his son tightly, burying his face in the boy’s dark hair, his massive shoulders trembling with the sudden release of overwhelming relief.

I stood beside them, leaning against the cold metal of the ambulance door as the adrenaline finally drained out of my body, leaving behind a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.

Damian looked up, holding Luca with one arm while reaching out with his other hand to pull me flush against his side, drawing us both into a single, unbreakable embrace.

“You’re safe,” Damian whispered against my temple, his voice thick with raw emotion.

“We’re all safe.”

Three months later, the autumn chill gave way to the crisp, bright mornings of early winter in Chicago.

The Vescari syndicate was permanently restructured, Moretti and his remaining lieutenants locked away in maximum-security federal isolation, and Bellamy House was long forgotten, replaced by a gleaming new philanthropic foundation headquarters overlooking the lake.

And at the head of that foundation, sitting behind a polished mahogany desk in a tailored emerald blazer, was me.

The heavy oak doors of my new office swung open softly.

Damian walked in, holding a single, flawless white rose in his hand, followed closely by Luca carrying a small, handmade paper crown glued together with glitter and gold paint.

“The board meeting adjourned early,” Damian said, stepping up to my desk and placing the white rose gently beside my computer.

“And my favorite superhero has an executive decree to deliver,” Luca added cheerfully, marching right up to my chair and holding out the glittering paper crown.

I knelt down, letting Luca carefully place the crooked, homemade crown upon my head.

Damian smiled, his dark eyes shining with a deep, bottomless affection as he reached out, taking my hand in his warm, calloused palm.

“You saved my son, you outsmarted an empire, and you brought light into a world made of stone, Emma,” Damian murmured softly, pulling me up into his arms as Luca cheered happily beside us.

“You were never just a waitress who caught a falling glass.”

May you like

“What am I then, Damian?” I whispered, smiling up into his eyes.

“You are my queen,” he answered, sealing the promise with a kiss that made the entire world outside completely disappear.
