Chapter 10 - The Fall of Julian’s Empire

The sharp warning cry tore from my throat, but the deafening roar of the warehouse environment swallowed half the sound.

Dominic spun around with incredible, terrifying speed, his instincts overriding the agonizing pull of his healing surgical incisions.

The mercenary rushing down the aisle raised his submachine gun, aiming straight for Dominic’s chest at point-blank range.

Before the operative could squeeze the trigger, Dominic whipped the heavy stock of his empty shotgun upward in a brutal, sweeping arc.

The thick polymer butt struck the mercenary squarely in the jaw with a sickening crunch, sending him crashing backward over a rolling tool cart.

The man hit the concrete floor and lay completely still, his weapon clattering harmlessly against the metal plating.

Dominic stood swaying over the fallen operative, his breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps, his hands trembling violently around the shotgun.

“Elena... are you... are you hit?” he rasped, not looking back as he scanned the shadowy corners of the warehouse for more threats.

“I’m fine! I’m okay!” I called out, scrambling to my feet from behind the server rack, my knees bruised and my hands shaking uncontrollably.

I rushed over to his side, throwing my shoulder beneath his arm just as he swayed dangerously to the left.

“We need to get out of here right now,” I urged, supporting his heavy frame as blood soaked visibly through his tactical vest. “The upload is complete. The federal marshals are already en route.”

Dominic cast one final, cold look across the ruined warehouse, his expression devoid of triumph, filled instead with the grim realization of a war finally concluded.

“Let’s go,” he murmured, allowing me to guide him toward the rear emergency exit leading directly out to the dark, freezing harbor docks.

As we stumbled out into the cool, cleansing rain, the distant wail of multiple sirens echoed across the water, growing louder by the second.

Red and blue emergency lights flashed brilliantly against the dark harbor waves, illuminating a fleet of federal armored vehicles and unmarked cruisers swarming the industrial access road.

Armed federal marshals poured out of the vehicles, surrounding the warehouse and cutting off all avenues of escape for Julian’s remaining operatives.

We stopped near the edge of the wooden pier, the bitter ocean wind whipping our hair as we watched the chaos unfold.

A tall, imposing man in a tailored federal trench coat stepped out from the lead cruiser, holding a badge aloft as he approached the front of the warehouse.

Agent Vance—not the traitorous hospital CEO Marcus, but the head of the FBI’s organized crime division—scanned the pier and locked eyes directly with Dominic.

“Dominic Vale?” the agent called out, his hand resting cautiously near his holster as he stepped closer. “It’s over, Vale. Sit down and keep your hands where we can see them.”

Dominic didn't drop to his knees. Instead, he stood tall, his posture unwavering despite the blood loss and exhaustion, letting out a slow, heavy breath.

“Check the master server inside, Agent,” Dominic replied, his voice carrying clearly across the wet pavement.

“You’ll find every offshore account, every encrypted shipping manifest, and every cartel transaction belonging to Julian right there on the screen.”

The FBI agent paused, signaling two armed officers to secure the building before turning his attention back to the billionaire.

“And what about you, Vale?” the agent asked suspiciously. “You’re implicated in half of these shell corporations.”

“I’m turning myself in as a cooperating federal witness,” Dominic answered calmly, turning his dark eyes toward me for a lingering moment.

“Under the condition that civilian medical personnel who aided this investigation receive absolute immunity and protection.”

I stared at him in stunned silence, my breath catching in my throat as the weight of his sacrifice settled over me.

“Dominic... no,” I whispered, tears mixing with the cold rain streaming down my cheeks. “You didn't have to bargain for me.”

Dominic reached out, his scarred hand gently brushing a damp lock of hair away from my forehead, his touch as warm as it had been back in room 412.

“You kept me alive when everyone else left me for dead, Elena,” he murmured softly, a genuine, gentle smile breaking across his weary face.

“It’s my turn to keep you safe.”

Before I could answer, federal agents moved in, gently taking Dominic’s arms to guide him toward a waiting medical transport van.

May you like

He didn't resist, casting one last, lingering look back at me as the heavy doors of the van closed, sealing him inside.

As the sirens faded into the night and the rain slowly began to turn into a gentle mist, I realized that my ordinary life as an ICU night nurse was gone forever.
