Chapter 8 - The Digital Trap

The banks of high-end computer monitors along the back wall of the warehouse suddenly flickered from steady blue to a harsh, pulsating crimson.
A synthetic warning alarm began chiming softly, signaling an unauthorized data breach originating from an external IP address trying to crack our encrypted local network.
Dominic pushed himself up from the trauma cot despite my protests, ignoring the fresh pull on his stitches as he limped toward the main console.
“Who is it?” I asked, hovering nervously behind him with a roll of medical gauze still clutched in my hand.
“Julian,” Dominic answered flatly, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed, bringing up a split-screen display of satellite feeds and local traffic cameras.
“He didn't just track our car’s license plate; he traced the encrypted satellite phone frequency I used to route our financial logs.”
On the central monitor, a live aerial feed showed a convoy of three unmarked black SUVs turning off the main highway onto the isolated service road leading directly toward our warehouse.
“They’ll be at the front doors in less than four minutes,” I said, my heart starting to race again as panic threatened to overwhelm my professional composure.
“We need to run. Is there a boat? A tunnel? Anything?”
Dominic didn't answer immediately; his eyes were glued to a secondary monitor displaying the warehouse’s internal security blueprint and perimeter sensors.
“There’s no time to run, Elena,” Dominic said calmly, his voice dangerously steady as he typed a final command into the master terminal.
“Julian wants my entire empire, and he knows this warehouse is the only place left where my offline servers hold the complete transaction history of his offshore accounts.”
“Then we surrender the data!” I pleaded, stepping closer to him and placing a hand on his arm. “Let him have the files! Money and ships aren't worth dying for!”
Dominic stopped typing and slowly turned his head to look at me, his dark eyes holding a heavy, sorrowful weight that made my breath catch.
“It’s not about the money, Elena,” Dominic murmured softly. “If Julian gets those files, he doesn't just take my empire—he frames me for every single assassination, cartel payout, and human trafficking ring he ran behind my back.”
“He used my name as a shield for a decade,” Dominic continued, his jaw tightening with cold rage. “If I surrender now, I go down in history as a monster.”
“Then we fight back,” I heard myself say, the words slipping out of my mouth before my logical brain could stop them.
Dominic stared at me for a long moment, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his scarred face before transforming into a warm, fierce grin.
“That’s my nurse,” he whispered, sliding open a heavy metal drawer beneath the desk to reveal an array of tactical firearms, ammunition clips, and military-grade tactical vests.
He pulled out a lightweight Kevlar vest and tossed it toward me. “Put that on, seal the Velcro tightly around your ribs, and stay behind the main server racks.”
I caught the heavy vest clumsily, my hands shaking as I slipped it over my blue scrubs, the industrial material feeling strangely comforting against my chest.
“I don't even know how to hold a gun, Dominic!” I protested, watching him load a heavy automatic pistol with practiced, mechanical efficiency.
“You won’t need to shoot,” Dominic replied, sliding the pistol into his waistband as he pulled a heavy tactical shotgun from the rack.
“You’re going to execute the final upload of Julian’s financial crimes directly to the Department of Justice mainframe while I keep them occupied at the entrance.”

Before I could argue or beg him to stay back, the heavy steel front doors of the warehouse shuddered under a massive, deafening impact.
They were using a breaching ram.
