Chapter 6 - The Price of Betrayal

The heavy rain pounded relentlessly against the concrete floor of the underground loading dock, splashing icy droplets across our shoes as the tense standoff reached its boiling point.

CEO Marcus Vance stood casually beside the matte-black armored SUV, his tailored charcoal suit immaculate despite the damp environment, a sickeningly confident smirk plastered across his face.

Two armed operatives flanked him, their suppressed rifles raised and trained directly at Dominic’s chest with chilling precision.

“Spare me the theatrical warnings, Dominic,” Marcus scoffed, stepping slightly closer while keeping a safe distance from the volatile billionaire.

“You’ve spent eighty-nine days lying in a hospital bed, your muscles atrophied, your internal organs half-shredded by lead, and you think you can reclaim an empire?”

Marcus shook his head slowly, chuckling under his breath. “You aren't a king anymore, Vale. You’re just a dying man standing in a drafty garage.”

I stood frozen beside Dominic, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I looked at the armed men surrounding us.

For a brief, terrifying second, I regretted ever stepping into room 412, ever reading The Art of War, ever whispering that single word into the dark.

Dominic didn't flinch. He didn’t drop his head or show a single ounce of fear, instead locking his dark, piercing gaze onto Marcus with a predatory stillness.

“Marcus,” Dominic spoke, his voice dangerously low, cutting through the ambient roar of the storm like a razor blade. “Did you really think I trusted you blindly with my medical care?”

Marcus’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing behind his gold-rimmed glasses. “What are you talking about?”

“For ten years, you’ve embezzled millions from the hospital’s research funds to cover your gambling debts in Macau,” Dominic continued smoothly, stepping forward as if completely immune to his own severe trauma injuries.

“I knew about your offshore accounts before you even signed your first contract as CEO.”

The color drained completely from Marcus’s face, his smooth facade cracking instantly under the weight of the leaked secrets.

“You... you’re lying,” Marcus stammered, his voice losing its steady composure as he took an involuntary step back toward the vehicle.

“Every financial transaction, every forged signature, every wire transfer to the Cayman Islands is currently being uploaded to every federal prosecutor in New England,” Dominic lied with absolute, chilling conviction.

“And the moment your encrypted dead-switch activates, your entire life goes up in flames right alongside Julian’s shipping empire.”

Marcus panicked, turning frantically toward the two armed guards standing behind him. “Shoot him! Kill them both right now!”

The guards raised their rifles, their fingers tightening on the triggers as they prepared to open fire.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Dominic shoved me violently behind a nearby industrial concrete pillar, taking the line of fire entirely upon himself.

“No!” I screamed, watching in horror as Dominic lunged forward with explosive, impossible speed, closing the distance between himself and the nearest gunman before a bullet could leave the barrel.

He slammed his elbow brutally into the guard's throat, snatching the heavy automatic rifle from his grip with a swift, practiced motion.

Before the second operative could react, Dominic spun around, using the stolen weapon to fire two precise shots into the concrete floor directly at their feet, sending sparks flying.

“Drop your weapons or the next rounds go through your kneecaps!” Dominic roared, his voice carrying the terrifying authority of a man who had built a criminal empire from blood and iron.

The guards froze, looking uncertainly between their bleeding, enraged employer and the terrifying billionaire holding a loaded rifle.

Marcus scrambled desperately toward the driver-side door of the SUV, fumbling wildly with his car keys as panic completely overwhelmed him.

“You’re insane, Vale! You’ll never survive what’s coming!” Marcus shrieked, finally managing to yank the heavy door open and dive inside the vehicle.

Dominic didn't hesitate; he raised the rifle and fired a single, deafening shot directly into the front tire of the armored SUV, blowing it out with a loud bang.

The vehicle slammed violently to one side as the rim hit the concrete, trapping Marcus inside the stalled vehicle.

“Elena! Get in the back!” Dominic ordered sharply, not taking his eyes off the paralyzed guards as he reached out to yank open the rear passenger door of a second, unmarked sedan parked nearby.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably, but survival instinct took over as I dove into the back seat of the car, slamming the door shut behind me.

Dominic slipped into the driver’s seat with a harsh gasp of pain, his hands gripping the steering wheel as fresh blood soaked through his bandages.

He threw the car into reverse, burning rubber against the wet asphalt as we spun around and rocketed out of the underground loading bay into the torrential rain of the Boston night.
