Chapter 11 - The Silence After the Storm

The federal holding facility on the outskirts of Boston was stark, windowless, and oppressively quiet, a stark contrast to the chaotic violence of the harbor warehouse.

I sat on a hard plastic chair in a secure debriefing room, wrapped tightly in a wool blanket provided by a sympathetic female marshal.

For six hours straight, teams of federal investigators, forensic accountants, and prosecutors had grilled me about my shifts in room 412.

They wanted to know every detail about Dominic Vale—every word he muttered, every movement he made, every visitor who had crossed his threshold.

I answered every question honestly, shielding nothing, yet refusing to let them paint him purely as a criminal mastermind.

“You realize, Ms. Miller, that aiding a high-value federal target—even under duress—puts you in permanent crosshairs?” the lead prosecutor asked for the third time, sliding a thick manila folder across the metal table.

“I kept a dying man alive while his own hospital tried to execute him,” I replied steadily, my voice devoid of fear, hardening into something much more resilient.

“If that makes me a criminal in your eyes, then file the charges.”

The prosecutor stared at me for a long, calculating moment before letting out a soft sigh and closing the folder.

“You’re free to go, Elena,” he said quietly. “Federal witness protection is available if you feel your safety is compromised by Julian’s remaining associates.”

“No witness protection,” I answered firmly, standing up from the chair. “I’ve spent my whole life hiding from shadows. I’m done running.”

Ten minutes later, I walked out the heavy glass front doors of the federal building into the bright, crisp light of a crisp Boston morning.

The storm had passed completely, leaving behind clear blue skies and puddles that reflected the morning sun.

A sleek, dark sedan idling at the curb caught my attention immediately, its tinted window rolling down slowly to reveal Agent Vance from the FBI team.

“Need a ride back to your apartment, Ms. Miller?” the agent asked, offering a courteous, respectful nod.

“Will I be followed?” I asked bluntly, resting my hands in the pockets of my jacket.

Agent Vance offered a grim, knowing smile. “Julian’s entire operational network was dismantled before sunrise. His assets are frozen, and Marcus Vance is currently sitting in a holding cell two floors down.”

“And Dominic?” I asked, my heart skipping a beat despite my best efforts to remain detached.

“He’s being held in a secure medical wing at the federal penitentiary downtown, recovering from his surgeries under armed guard,” Vance replied.

“He requested a visitor’s pass for you, effective immediately, if you choose to use it.”

I stood on the sidewalk for a long moment, the morning breeze rustling my hair as I weighed the terrifying reality of what my life had become.

“Take me to him,” I said.
