Chapter 8 - The Hostile Takeover at the ICU Doors

Luca’s hand tightened around the edges of his smartphone until the casing creaked under the immense pressure of his grip.
“Explain that, Arthur,” Luca said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying hum.
“Give me the exact numbers.”
“Ten minutes after Vanessa stormed out of that boutique, her father’s legal team filed an emergency injunction with the state securities commission,” Arthur explained rapidly from the other end of the line.
“They claimed that under a legacy marital asset clause—signed into effect during your marriage—you were mentally incapacitated and legally vulnerable due to emotional distress.”
“They attempted to freeze the Moretti family trust accounts and transfer voting shares of the primary shipping subsidiaries directly to Sinclair Maritime.”
Across the room, my heart hammered against my ribs.
Even while fleeing the scene of her crime, Vanessa had not abandoned her ultimate goal: destroying the Moretti empire from the inside out.
“Did the commission accept the filing?” Luca demanded, his dark eyes fixed on the floor outside my recovery room window.
“They would have,” Arthur replied grimly, “except for one minor detail.”
“Which is?”
“Marcus Hayes and I were already standing in front of Judge Sterling with the physical forensic analysis of the forged divorce decree and the Mercer Hotel deepfake surveillance logs.”
“We showed the judge the unedited metadata proving that Isabella’s signature was a mechanical pantograph trace.”
“Judge Sterling didn't just throw out their injunction, Luca.”
“He issued an immediate bench warrant for Vanessa Sinclair and Julian Sinclair on counts of grand larceny, fraud, perjury, and conspiracy to commit corporate sabotage.”
A heavy, lethal silence hung on the line.
Luca let out a slow, terrifying exhale.
“Where are they now?”
“They’re currently barricaded in the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of the Sinclair Tower,” Arthur said.
“They’re attempting to shred physical paper files and wipe local server drives before federal marshals arrive.”
“Don’t let them burn a single sheet of paper,” Luca commanded, his voice ringing with absolute finality.
“Tell Marcus to cut the master power grid to the forty-fifth floor immediately.”
“Lock down all smart elevators, disable their digital keycard access, and post private security at every stairwell exit.”
“I want them trapped inside that boardroom like rats in a cage until I arrive.”
“You’re coming down here?” Arthur asked, sounding surprised.
“You just became a father, Luca. Let the federal marshals handle the cleanup.”
“No,” Luca said, his voice turning to ice.
“They tried to murder my marriage.”
“They tried to steal my child’s future.”
“And they made my wife cry tears of despair for seven lonely months while they sat in my penthouses.”
“I am going to watch them fall.”
Luca ended the call with a sharp tap of his thumb.
He turned slowly back toward the hospital bed, his expression softening instantly as his gaze landed on our newborn daughter resting quietly against my chest.
He walked back over, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to my cheek.
“I have to go downtown for an hour, Isabella,” he murmured, his voice thick with lingering regret.
“I need to finish burning down the cage they built around us.”
“Be careful, Luca,” I whispered, my fingers catching the cuff of his sleeve.
“Julian and Vanessa are desperate. A cornered animal is dangerous.”
“Let them be desperate,” Luca replied, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“They’re about to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping bear.”
He kissed our daughter’s forehead, whispered a soft promise to return before nightfall, and turned on his heel, striding out of the hospital room with the lethal grace of a predator on the hunt.
