Chapter 9 - Forty-Five Floors Above Manhattan

The forty-fifth floor of the Sinclair Tower was bathed in the harsh, flickering red glow of emergency backup lights.
The master power grid had been cut three minutes prior by Marcus Hayes’s forensic team, plunging the executive wing into an eerie, shadowy silence broken only by the hum of cooling servers and the distant wail of sirens far below on Fifth Avenue.
Inside the mahogany-paneled boardroom, panic had entirely replaced Upper East Side arrogance.
“The keycard is dead!” Julian Sinclair shouted, slamming his fist against the reinforced glass of the double doors.
“The damn smart lock won't even accept my master override code!”
“Stop pounding on the glass, you idiot!” Vanessa screamed, her hair disheveled, her designer jacket discarded on the floor, and her mascara running down her cheeks in dark streaks.
“Get back to the shredder! Feed those tax evasion ledgers into the cross-cut blades right now!”
“The shredder jammed because you shoved three binders in at once!” Julian yelled back, his face red with fury and raw terror.
“Where is father’s legal team? Why aren’t they stopping Moretti?”
“Father’s legal team abandoned us the moment Arthur Vance filed the federal fraud charges!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking into hysteria.
“Moretti has the Mercer Hotel video! He has the forensic handwriting analysis! Everything is over!”
“Not if we wipe the offshore server banks,” Julian muttered, lunging toward the mahogany console against the far wall.
“If we can scrub the Cayman accounts before the marshals breach the roof—”
Click.
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom didn't just open; they were violently unlatched from the outside.
The deadbolts retracted with a mechanical hiss.
Vanessa and Julian froze mid-motion, turning their heads in absolute horror toward the grand entryway.
The emergency backup lights cast long, distorted shadows across the threshold.
Step by slow, deliberate step, Luca Moretti walked into the boardroom.
He wasn't running. He wasn't shouting.
He simply walked in with his hands buttoned neatly inside his charcoal suit jacket, his dark eyes fixed on the two siblings like an executioner approaching the guillotine.
“L-Luca,” Vanessa stammered, taking a panicked step backward until the edge of the mahogany conference table hit her lower back.
“You... you should be at the hospital with Isabella. What are you doing here?”
“I came to check on my guests,” Luca said softly.
His voice carried across the silent, darkened boardroom with terrifying clarity.
“You look tired, Vanessa. All that frantic shredding must be terribly exhausting for someone who prides herself on immaculate breeding.”
“This is private property!” Julian blustered, stepping in front of his sister with a desperate show of false bravado.
“You have no right to breach Sinclair corporate offices without a warrant!”
Luca stopped five feet away from them.
He didn't raise his voice. He didn't tense his shoulders.
He simply raised his left hand and tossed a small, heavy silver flash drive onto the polished mahogany table between them.
It skidded across the wood and came to a rest directly against Julian’s coffee cup.
“What is that?” Julian whispered, staring down at the metal stick.
“That is the complete, unedited backup of your private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands,” Luca said calmly.
“Every wire transfer you made to fund the Mercer Hotel deepfake setup.”
“Every bribe you paid to the digital forensics clerk who leaked the corrupted files.”
“And every penny of subsidiary debt you embezzled from Moretti Holdings over the last three years.”
Vanessa’s knees buckled.
She caught herself against the edge of the table, her breath coming in short, ragged gasps.
“You... you can't prove any of that belonged to us,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“The accounts were registered under shell corporations in Panama.”
“Shell corporations managed by your cousin’s law firm in Zurich,” Luca countered smoothly, stepping one pace closer.
“Which folded under federal subpoena twenty minutes ago.”
“Federal marshals are currently securing the lobby downstairs, Vanessa.”
“They have warrants for both of your arrests.”
“And as for Sinclair Maritime?”
Luca tilted his head, his gaze hardening into pure steel.
“By tomorrow morning, my legal team will execute every single default provision on your family's debt.”
“Your father’s company will be liquidated for scrap metal to pay off your legal fees.”
“You’ll be bankrupt before the end of the week.”
“You can't do that!” Julian screamed, lunging forward with his fists raised.
“I’ll kill you, you arrogant bastard!”
Before Julian could take two steps, Luca didn't even flinch.
From the shadows beside the doorway, two massive private security operatives stepped forward instantly.
One of them grabbed Julian’s arm, twisting it behind his back with bone-cracking force, and slammed him face-first onto the mahogany table.
“Get your hands off me!” Julian roared into the wood.
“Let me go!”
Vanessa let out a piercing shriek as the second operative stepped around the table and placed heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists with a sharp click.
“No! No, Luca, please!” Vanessa wailed, tears streaming down her ruined makeup as she struggled against the grip.
“We were going to build an empire together! I loved you more than she ever could!”
Luca stopped inches away from her, looking down at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.
“You don't know the meaning of the word love, Vanessa,” Luca said quietly.
“Love is sitting in a tiny Queens walk-up, teaching piano lessons while eight months pregnant because you believe your husband abandoned you.”
“Love is walking through fire without a single complaint.”
“You were nothing more than a parasite trying to feed on a life you never earned.”
He turned his back on them without another word.
“Take them out,” Luca commanded the operatives.

“Make sure the federal marshals downstairs get a clean handoff.”
“Yes, Mr. Moretti,” the guards echoed, dragging the screaming, kicking siblings toward the dark elevators as the red emergency lights flickered overhead.
