Chapter 7 - The Whispers in the Corridor and Victoria’s Desperate Alliance

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom had barely clicked shut before the chilling silence of the aftermath settled over the room like a physical weight.

Santino remained stationed at the head of the long mahogany table, his dark slate-grey eyes fixed unblinkingly on Emily, waiting for an answer to his question.

Emily closed her black leather binder with a crisp, deliberate snap, keeping her expression perfectly neutral.

“I’m not hiding anything, Mr. Ferrara,” Emily replied steadily, meeting his intense gaze without flinching. “I’m simply doing the job you hired me to do: protecting your assets and ensuring that no one mistakes composure for weakness.”

Santino studied her face for a long, agonizing moment, searching her features for any sign of deceit, nervousness, or fear.

What he found instead was an unyielding wall of professional detachment that intrigued him far more than it alarmed him.

In a world where everyone around him—from his treacherous sister to the cowering capos of New York—was constantly plotting his downfall for power, money, or survival, Emily Taylor stood completely apart, operating by a code he couldn't quite decipher.

“Protection is a two-way street in this house, Emily,” Santino said softly, dropping formalities as he maneuvered his motorized wheelchair away from the table and toward the panoramic windows overlooking the Providence skyline. “When you make enemies of men like Sal Moretti, you paint a target on your own back. They don't lose four million dollars and walk away quietly. They find leverage.”

“Let them look,” Emily replied evenly, gathering her notes into a neat pile. “People who spend their time looking for leverage usually miss the trap right in front of them.”

A low, gravelly chuckle rumbled deep in Santino’s chest—a sound that rarely escaped him.

“Dismissed for the evening,” Santino said, waving a hand dismissively toward the exit without turning back. “Take the Ferrara sedan tonight. Refuse it again, and I’ll have Rafe carry you to the car himself.”

Emily offered a polite, professional nod, knowing when a battle of wills had reached its tactical limit.

She turned and walked out of the boardroom, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished oak floor.

However, as she descended the grand marble staircase toward the ground-floor exit, she didn't make it out to the lobby.

Muted, angry voices drifted from the shadows of the second-floor private study—a room usually reserved for family council meetings.

She slowed her pace, stepping silently onto the Persian rug of the second-floor landing and pressing her back against the cool wood-paneled wall just outside the half-open door of the study.

“You completely underestimated her, Victoria!” a gruff, unfamiliar male voice hissed with suppressed fury. “I told you the girl was a liability the moment she jumped into that pool! Now New York is screaming for our blood because she handed Santino a weapon on a silver platter!”

Emily’s breath caught in her throat.

She recognized the voice instantly: it belonged to Marcus Vance, the syndicate’s chief financial officer and one of Victoria’s oldest, most trusted co-conspirators within the family enterprise.

A soft, venomous laugh answered him from inside the room.

“Calm down, Marcus,” Victoria’s cold, melodic voice replied, dripping with malice. “The girl is ambitious, yes, but ambition makes people greedy. She thinks she’s playing chess with Santino, but she has no idea what lies buried in her own past. I spent the afternoon having our private investigators dig into her background history before she doctored her resume.”

Emily’s heart hammered violently against her ribs.

She froze, every muscle in her body turning to ice as she listened closer.

“What did you find?” Marcus asked eagerly.

“Her real name isn't just Emily Taylor,” Victoria purred with sadistic satisfaction. “Her father was Arthur Taylor—the dock supervisor who took the fall for the missing narcotics shipment ten years ago before he drank himself to death in a rundown apartment on the West Side. And do you know why she really jumped into that pool? She didn't save Santino out of kindness. She’s here for revenge.”

Inside the study, papers rustled sharply.

“If Santino finds out she lied on her background check to infiltrate his inner circle, he’ll execute her before the sun rises,” Marcus noted, a note of dark excitement in his tone.

“Oh, he won't execute her right away,” Victoria corrected smoothly. “He’ll feel betrayed. And a betrayed Santino is a reckless Santino. We are going to leak her true identity to the New York delegation tonight. Let Sal Moretti’s men do the dirty work for us, and when her body washes up in the harbor, Santino will be too busy cleaning up the mess to notice who is quietly restructuring the shipping accounts.”

Emily stood paralyzed in the corridor, the blood draining completely from her face.

The trap she had spent three years building had just been inverted.

They knew who she was.

They knew why she was here.

And they had just handed her death sentence to the most dangerous mobsters on the East Coast.
