Chapter 13 - The Memorial at Arlington

The autumn mist hung low over the rolling green hills of Arlington National Cemetery as the morning sun began to burn through the fog.

I walked slowly along the paved pathway of Section 60, my dark service coat buttoned tightly against the crisp morning breeze.

Beside me walked Chloe, holding a small bouquet of white lilies and fresh lavender.

Behind us, little Lily skipped along the grass, her hand safely wrapped around Captain Ramos’s gloved thumb.

We stopped in front of a clean, polished white headstone standing proudly beneath the branches of an old oak tree.

The engraved letters caught the morning light:

SPECIAL AGENT DAVID KELLER.

DEFENSE LOGISTICS AGENCY.

A SERVANT OF TRUTH AND HONOR.

Chloe knelt down in the damp grass, gently placing the white lilies at the base of the stone.

A single tear slipped down her cheek, but her expression was serene, radiant, and entirely free of fear.

“You didn't die in vain, David,” Chloe whispered, her voice trembling slightly in the quiet air.

“The men who tried to bury you in the bay are buried beneath federal prison cells now.”

“Your name has been cleared, and your honor has been restored to the nation.”

I placed my hand gently on Chloe’s shoulder, standing guard over my daughter just as I had done every day of her life.

Captain Ramos stepped forward, snapping a crisp, flawless military salute toward the headstone.

“Rest in peace, brother,” the Captain murmured.

“The watch is held.”

We stood in silence for several long minutes, listening to the distant rustle of the autumn leaves and the quiet murmur of the wind.

The evil that had threatened to consume my family had been swept away by the unwavering strength of the United States military and the unbreakable bond of a mother’s love.
