Chapter 8 - The Global Web Unraveled

The secure briefing room in the basement of the Department of Defense headquarters in Arlington was lit by the cold, blue glow of three massive wall-mounted monitors.

General Marcus Vance stood at the head of the polished oak table, tapping a laser pointer against a complex digital network map that spanned three continents.

“The decryption of the DARPA quantum-resistant drive recovered from Chloe’s shoulder has revealed an international conspiracy far larger than initial federal estimates,” General Vance announced.

I sat near the center of the table, my uniform spotless, my expression carved from granite.

Special Agent Bennett and three senior directors from the Central Intelligence Agency flanked the left side of the room.

“The Sterling Global shipping network was not just smuggling counterfeit titanium into our submarine yards,” General Vance continued, clicking to a new slide filled with corporate registry documents.

“They were operating as a logistics front for illegal high-grade military hardware transfers to rogue state actors in Eastern Europe and South America.”

The screen shifted to show financial records linking Richard and Beatrice Sterling to offshore accounts in Zurich and Panama.

“Over the past seven years, they funneled more than four hundred million dollars in illicit kickbacks through a network of thirty shell companies.”

“Among their primary foreign contacts was a disgraced former defense minister currently residing in an undisclosed European safe haven.”

Agent Bennett leaned forward, resting his elbows on the mahogany table.

“The murder of Defense Logistics Auditor David Keller was not an isolated incident,” Bennett added grimly.

“Our forensic team recovered encrypted emails from Richard Sterling’s personal server proving that they eliminated two other civilian whistleblowers in 2023 and 2024.”

“Both deaths were successfully covered up by bribing local municipal police chiefs and county coroners.”

I stared at the photographs of the victims displayed on the central screen, my jaw tightening until the muscles ached.

“They treated human lives like disposable inventory,” I said, my voice deadpan and chillingly quiet.

“They believed their billions of dollars placed them above the laws of nature and nations.”

“And now,” General Vance said, turning off the laser pointer, “every single asset, associate, and co-conspirator linked to this network is being systematically dismantled.”

“Extradition warrants have been issued for all international partners.”

“The Sterling name has been legally erased from every commercial registry in the United States.”

“Good,” I said, standing up from my chair and buttoning my service coat.

“Let them rot in the deepest federal penitentiary this country has to offer.”

“The mission is accomplished, General.”

“Let’s bring our people home.”
