Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Dynasty's Fall

Two military flight surgeons arrived with a motorized transport bed, gently moving Chloe onto a clean, heated mattress.

An IV line was inserted into her left forearm, delivering concentrated saline and pain management medication.

Chloe gripped my fingers with a strength that defied her broken appearance.

“Mom, don't leave my sight,” she pleaded, her voice trembling through tears of exhaustion.

“I am right here, sweetheart,” I said, walking beside the gurney.

“Nobody on this earth is ever going to hurt you again.”

Special Agent Bennett stepped alongside us, holding an electronic tablet displaying real-time financial tracking algorithms.

“Colonel Miller, the preliminary sweep of the drive’s contents has already cleared through the Department of Justice,” Bennett reported.

“The evidence is beyond ironclad.”

“It details seven years of systematic military procurement fraud executed by Sterling Global Logistics.”

“They have been billing the Department of the Navy for high-grade naval titanium for our submarine fleet while substituting substandard commercial-grade alloy sourced from black-market distributors in Eastern Europe.”

I stopped walking and looked back at Richard Sterling, who was now being handcuffed by two federal marshals.

“Substandard titanium in nuclear hulls?” I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

“You put three hundred sailors’ lives at risk to increase your profit margin by eight percent?”

Richard lowered his head, refusing to meet my gaze.

Chloe raised her head weakly from the pillow, her voice hoarse but filled with venomous clarity.

“That’s not all, Mom,” Chloe said, coughing slightly.

“Tell them about Agent Keller, Richard.”

Richard flinched violently as if he had been struck with an open palm.

Beatrice, her hands now bound behind her back with tactical restraints, snapped her head toward her son.

“Richard, keep your mouth shut!” Beatrice ordered fiercely.

“Invoke your fifth amendment privilege immediately!”

“Agent David Keller was the civilian Defense Logistics Agency auditor assigned to the Sterling shipyard in Norfolk last month,” Chloe explained, tears spilling down her cheeks.

“He found the counterfeit material manifests.”

“He came to our home three weeks ago to warn Richard that an official criminal inquiry was being opened.”

Chloe’s voice broke, a shudder racking her entire frame.

“Richard and Carter invited him down to the yacht club for dinner to ‘negotiate a settlement.’”

“Agent Keller never left that marina.”

“His car was found submerged in the Chesapeake Bay two days later with the driver’s window smashed out.”

“The local police ruled it an accidental drowning after Beatrice paid off the county coroner to sign the autopsy without a toxicity screen.”

Agent Bennett’s jaw hardened, his eyes locking onto Richard with cold disgust.

“We recovered Agent Keller’s encrypted field notes from the brass drive five minutes ago,” Bennett said.

“Keller had time to upload a voice memo right before his phone went dead.”

“He named Richard and Carter Sterling directly as the men who spiked his drink and forced him into the vehicle.”

Carter Sterling began sobbing hysterically against the wall where he was pinned.

“It was Richard’s idea!” Carter wailed, his broken nose dripping blood onto his designer dress shirt.

“Richard said if Keller reported the titanium, the federal contracts would be canceled!”

“He said we would lose the entire shipping line!”

“Shut up, you pathetic idiot!” Beatrice screamed at her younger son, struggling against the two agents holding her.

“Shut your mouth!”

“The Department of Justice has already enacted an emergency asset forfeiture order,” General Vance announced, stepping between the family members.

“As of two-fifteen this morning, every bank account, shipping vessel, real estate holding, and trust fund associated with the Sterling name has been frozen under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.”

General Vance looked at his military timepiece.

“The pre-market futures in Tokyo and London have just opened.”

“The news of the federal indictments has already hit the financial wires.”

“Sterling Global stock is currently down seventy-four percent.”

“By nine o'clock this morning on Wall Street, the Sterling empire will not exist.”

Beatrice looked as though she had been struck by lightning.

The arrogant, regal matriarch who had strutted into the emergency room twenty minutes earlier was completely gone.

Her designer coat was rumpled, her hair was falling out of its pins, and her skin had taken on the color of sour milk.

“You can't do this to us,” Beatrice whimpered, her voice losing its aristocratic polish.

“We are the Sterlings.”

“We built this state.”

“We built this city.”

“You didn't build anything, Beatrice,” I said, stepping directly in front of her.

“You stole from soldiers who bleed in combat zones so you could buy penthouses and yacht clubs.”

“You beat my daughter and tried to lock her in a cage so she wouldn't expose your greed.”

“You told me my uniform had no jurisdiction here.”

I leaned down, bringing my face two inches from hers.

“You were wrong.”

May you like

“My uniform represents the blood and bone of every decent person this country has ever produced.”

“And tonight, it is the wall your entire bloodline just crashed into.”
