Chapter 9 - The Federal Indictment

The Grand Jury courtroom on the fifth floor of the Federal District Court in Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity.

Camera crews from every major news network crowded behind the glass partitions, their lenses pointed toward the oak-paneled defense table.

Richard Sterling and his brother Carter sat side by side in orange prison jumpsuits, their heads bowed low to avoid the blinding glare of the media flashbulbs.

Beatrice Sterling sat at the center table, flanked by two court-appointed public defenders after her entire private legal team resigned en masse following the asset seizure.

The courtroom doors swung open, and Federal District Judge Arthur Sterling—no relation to the defendants—walked briskly to the bench, his black robes rustling in the heavy silence.

“All rise,” the bailiff commanded in a booming voice.

Everyone in the courtroom stood as the judge settled into his high-backed leather chair.

“Please be seated,” Judge Arthur Sterling said, adjusting his reading glasses as he opened the thick federal indictment case file.

“We are here for the formal arraignment and presentation of charges in the matter of United States versus Beatrice Sterling, Richard Sterling, and Carter Sterling.”

The prosecutor stepped forward, holding a microphone that amplified his voice across the chamber.

“Your Honor, the defendants stand jointly and severally indicted on one hundred and twelve counts of federal racketeering, high treason, industrial espionage, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and obstruction of justice.”

A collective gasp rippled through the gallery of reporters.

Beatrice raised her head slowly, her eyes bloodshot, her face lined with the crushing weight of utter ruin.

“How do the defendants plead to the charges?” the judge asked, looking down from the bench.

Beatrice’s public defender stood up nervously, smoothing his tie.

“Your Honor, my client Beatrice Sterling pleads not guilty to all charges, and we request an immediate bail hearing pending trial.”

Judge Arthur Sterling didn't even look up from the document in front of him.

“Bail is categorically denied,” the judge stated flatly.

“The defendants represent an extreme flight risk, and the nature of the capital murder and treason charges precludes any form of pre-trial release.”

“Furthermore, pursuant to the federal asset forfeiture statutes enacted at zero-two-fifteen hours yesterday, all remaining personal property, trusts, vehicles, and real estate holdings belonging to the Sterling family are permanently forfeited to the United States Treasury.”

Carter Sterling buried his face in his cuffed hands and began to sob openly, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably.

Richard stared blankly ahead at the wall, completely catatonic, realizing that every luxury, every privilege, and every drop of power he had ever known had evaporated into thin air.

Beatrice stood up slowly, turning her head to scan the crowded courtroom gallery as if searching for one last ally, one last corrupted politician, one last lawyer who could save her.

There was no one.

The courtroom was filled only with cold, unyielding silence and the steady gaze of federal marshals waiting to drag them back to their cells.

The empire built on greed, corruption, and blood had finally crumbled into dust.
