Chapter 10 - The Dawn of Justice and the Fall of the Sterling Empire

The morning sun broke through the dissipating fog over the pine forest, casting a warm, golden light across the muddy stream bank where the nightmare of the Sterling Estate was finally brought to an end.
Clara sat in the back of a warm state police cruiser, wrapped in a thick wool rescue blanket, holding little Lily safely against her chest as a federal paramedic checked her bruised hands.
Arthur Sterling, stripped of his arrogant confidence, sat handcuffed in the back of a separate transport van, staring blankly out the window as his multi-million-dollar legal career evaporated into thin air.
Up on the logging road, the elite investigative unit from the New York Investigative Tribune, flanked by the state attorney general’s corruption task force, was actively towing away the Sterling tactical van.
"The backup servers held, Clara," a federal investigator said gently, leaning down by the open cruiser door with a supportive smile.
"Your digital upload reached our main federal archive before their cybersecurity team could purge the node. We have every single document, audio file, and medical record safely secured."
"What about Eleanor?" Clara asked quietly, her heart beating steadily as she looked toward the horizon where the sun was fully rising.
"A federal arrest warrant has already been executed at the Sterling Mansion," the investigator replied with a satisfied nod.
"The matriarch is currently being booked on charges of kidnapping, fraud, forgery, and domestic imprisonment. The estate is officially under federal receivership."
Clara closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like shedding a twenty-ton weight she had been carrying on her back for three agonizing years.
She looked down at Lily, who was wide awake, looking out the police cruiser window with bright, curious eyes, watching the flashing red and blue lights fade into the morning sunrise.
"Mommy, are we ever going back to the dark attic?" Lily asked softly, her little hand reaching up to touch Clara’s cheek with innocent concern.
"Never again, my sweet angel," Clara promised, pulling her daughter into an unbreakable hug, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face for the first time in a lifetime.

"We are going home. Our real home."
As the police cruiser pulled away from the forest and headed down toward the open highway, the dark, oppressive reign of the Sterling dynasty officially crumbled into dust.
