Chapter 13 - Opening the Attic Doors to the Sunlight

The third-floor hallway of the Sterling Mansion was dim, smelling of old cedar and neglect, leading directly to the heavy, paneled door of the attic prison.
Clara stood before the door holding a heavy brass skeleton key she had retrieved from Arthur Sterling’s confiscated office desk downstairs.
Lily stood beside her, holding a small bouquet of fresh wildflowers she had picked from the courtyard garden on her way inside.
"Are we going to close it forever, Mommy?" Lily asked quietly, looking up at the dark wood of the attic door.
"We are going to open it wide, let the sunlight burn away every shadow, and turn it into the most beautiful playroom in the entire world," Clara smiled warmly, slipping the key into the antique lock.
With a satisfying, heavy click, the lock turned, and Clara pushed the attic door open wide.
The sunlight from the cracked gable window flooded into the dusty room, illuminating the rusted iron shackle on the floorboards, the small cot, and the piles of forgotten boxes.
The nightmare was officially over.
The cold, oppressive darkness that had haunted their lives for three long years was instantly incinerated by the bright, uncompromised light of justice and freedom.
Clara walked inside, taking a deep breath of the fresh morning air pouring through the open window, feeling a massive weight lift entirely off her shoulders.
She looked down at the rusted shackle on the floor, kicked it aside with the toe of her shoe, and smiled down at her daughter.

"Come on, Lily. Let’s go pick out some bright pink paint for the walls," Clara said happily.
They turned their backs on the attic, walking hand-in-hand down the stairs, leaving the ghosts of the past behind them in the dust where they belonged.
