Chapter 8 - The Ambush in the Pine Forest and the Mad Dash Through the Fog

The headlights of the tactical transport van cut sharply through the heavy fog surrounding the clearing, casting long, blinding beams across the front porch of the cabin.

CRASH!

The heavy wooden front gate of the property splintered into splinters as the armored vehicle rammed its way straight through the perimeter fence, coming to a screeching halt just ten feet from the front steps.

"Clara, grab Lily! Through the back door, now!" Thomas ordered fiercely, drawing his hunting rifle from the rack above the fireplace and chambering a round with a sharp, metallic snap.

Clara didn't hesitate. She bolted across the room to Lily’s cot, gently shaking the sleeping child awake.

"Lily, sweetie, wake up! We have to move right now, baby!" Clara urged, scooping the startled little girl up into her arms and wrapping her tightly in the woolen blanket.

The front door of the cabin exploded inward as a tactical flashbang grenade was tossed inside, detonating with a blinding white flash and an ear-splitting concussive roar.

"Clear the room! Search every corner!" shouted a heavily armored private security enforcer as he stormed into the smoke-filled cabin with an assault rifle raised.

Thomas fired a single warning shot into the ceiling beams, the deafening blast forcing the leading enforcer to dive backward out the shattered front door.

"Out the back window! Go, go, go!" Thomas yelled, covering Clara’s retreat as she kicked open the rear kitchen window and leaped out into the wet, muddy grass of the backyard.

Bullets tore through the thin log walls of the cabin, chewing up wood splinters and shattering the remaining glass panes as Thomas laid down heavy suppressing fire from the kitchen counter.

Clara clutched Lily against her chest, running blindly through the thick, freezing fog of the pine forest, her bare feet slipping on the wet moss and decaying leaves.

Behind them, shouting voices and the howling of estate tracking dogs pierced the damp night air, drawing closer with every frantic step they took through the dense underbrush.

"Mommy, I'm scared!" Lily sobbed into Clara’s shoulder, burying her face tightly against the fabric of her jacket to block out the terrifying sounds of pursuit.

"I've got you, baby! Just keep holding onto me!" Clara choked out, pushing her burning legs past their absolute physical limits as she navigated the treacherous, unlit terrain.

Up ahead, through the wall of white fog, the steep, rocky embankment of a rushing mountain stream loomed out of the darkness, offering the only possible escape route from the tracking dogs.

Clara didn't slow down. She threw herself down the slippery dirt bank, sliding through the wet mud with Lily in her arms, splashing heavily into the ice-cold water of the shallow stream.

The freezing water shocked her system, but she forced herself up, wading across the rushing current to the opposite bank and disappearing into the impenetrable shadow of a massive granite boulder.

A moment later, the estate tracking dogs reached the edge of the stream bank above them, barking furiously and scratching at the mud where their scent trail abruptly vanished in the water.

Clara held her breath, pressing her hand gently over Lily’s mouth to silence any accidental whimpers, praying silently that the dense fog would continue to hide their desperate refuge.
