Chapter 3 - THE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH AND THE REVENGE RECORDING

I stood on the manicured limestone sidewalk of the Caldwell estate, clutching a suitcase with a broken, wobbling wheel. Loose strands of my childhood hair still clung stubbornly to the wool of my gray sweater, catching the chilly Connecticut breeze.

Across the street, our elderly neighbor, Mrs. Walsh, had frozen mid-step beside her wrought-iron mailbox, her jaw dropping open in sheer disbelief as she took in my mutilated hair and the suitcase in my hand.

Victoria had stepped back out onto the grand porch just long enough to ensure her parting words carried across the quiet street for anyone within earshot to hear.

"There’s a temple downtown that shelters strays," Victoria called out loudly, her voice dripping with calculated, performative cruelty. "Go there where you belong."

The heavy oak door slammed shut behind me, the deadbolt shooting home with a heavy, final thud.

Mrs. Walsh dropped her bundle of mail onto the grass and started rushing across the asphalt toward me, horror written in every line of her weathered face.

Before she reached the curb, however, my eyes caught a small, dark shape glinting above her garage door—a high-definition security camera angled precisely toward the Caldwell entryway, capturing every single frame of what had just transpired.

Mrs. Walsh followed my gaze, and a fierce, knowing light entered her eyes.

"Oh, honey," Mrs. Walsh whispered, her hands trembling as she pulled her smartphone out of her coat pocket. "Tell me your phone is unlocked. You need to see what this security system recorded."

She tapped the screen, accessing the live-feed archive, and pressed play.

Through the high-fidelity directional microphone mounted on her garage, Victoria’s sharp, venomous voice came through the phone speakers with absolute, crystal-clear perfection. Every insult, every malicious command, the sound of the struggle, and the final slamming of the door were captured forever in digital amber.

"We have her," Mrs. Walsh whispered, her eyes burning with righteous indignation. "Every single second of it."
