Chapter 5 - THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON AND THE CRACKING FAÇADE

When Ethan returned from Chicago on Thursday evening, he stepped into a nightmare of his own making.
According to our building superintendent, Ethan found our apartment completely empty, coated in a strange, haunting stillness, with my clothes hanging silently in the closet alongside my old suitcases. Panic setting in, he drove straight to his mother's estate in Connecticut, demanding to know where I was and what had happened.
Victoria, secure in her absolute delusion of untouchable control, poured herself a glass of dry sherry in the study and fed him a carefully rehearsed, venomous lie.
"She packed her bags and left in the middle of the night, Ethan," Victoria sighed theatrically, dabbing a dry eye with an embroidered lace handkerchief. "She was unfaithful, darling. I caught her on the phone with another man, talking about how she was only using you for your family name. When I confronted her about her betrayal, she flew into a violent rage, broke a priceless family heirloom, and ran out into the night like a wild animal."
Ethan, shattered, exhausted from his trip, and emotionally manipulated by his mother since childhood, collapsed into a leather armchair in the study, burying his face in his hands.
"I don't believe it," he groaned, his voice cracking with anguish. "She wouldn't do that... she loved me."
At that exact, pre-calculated moment, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion did not just open—they were pushed wide open by two uniformed county deputies accompanied by Marcus Vance and me.
I wore a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit that cost more than two months of my old Ohio grocery budget, and my hair had been professionally styled into a sleek, stunning asymmetrical Parisian cut that completely neutralized the jagged disaster Victoria had inflicted upon my head.
Ethan looked up, his jaw hitting the floor as his bloodshot eyes locked onto mine.

"Olivia?" he whispered, scrambling to his feet as if he were seeing a ghost. "My God... what happened to your hair? Where have you been hiding?"
Victoria stood up from her chair behind the mahogany desk, her face draining of all color as she recognized the legal team standing behind me in the grand hallway.
