Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF CALDWELL

Victoria realized in that single heartbeat that her empire of smoke, mirrors, and cruelty had officially collapsed. Her knees buckled slightly, though she caught herself sharply against the edge of the mahogany table, her eyes flashing with pure venom.

"She didn't belong here!" Victoria shrieked, dropping the mask of polite gentility entirely as the social veneer splintered away. "She is nothing! A mechanic's daughter crawling in the dirt! I protected our family name from rot!"

The two county deputies stepped forward, reading her constitutional rights aloud as the heavy silver handcuffs clicked sharply around her wrists.

As they led her past the grand staircase where she had lorded over her family and staff for decades, Victoria glared at me with unyielding malice. "You'll never see a dime of this estate," she spat over her shoulder. "Ethan will divorce you before the ink dries on any paper!"

I didn't blink. I stepped closer to her, my voice drop-dead calm and chillingly polite.

"Victoria, you still don't seem to understand," I said softly. "I don't want your estate. Marcus and I spent the last forty-heits hours reviewing the corporate filings of Caldwell Holdings. Thanks to your reckless embezzlement of trust funds to cover your secret social gambling debts—documents you carelessly left unlocked in your study desk—the board of directors has already voted to oust you permanently. Furthermore, your upcoming real estate merger has been permanently canceled due to pending felony criminal investigations against primary stakeholders."

She froze, the color draining entirely from her face as the deputies pulled her through the heavy front doors into the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers.

"Your dynasty is bankrupt, your name is mud, and you are going to spend your golden years in a maximum-security holding cell."
