Chapter 2 - The Velvet Trap and the Poisoned Heir

Sabrina Vance arrived at the Caldwell estate like a slow-moving hurricane wrapped in designer silk and expensive perfume. To the public eye, she was the ultimate catch: a philanthropist, a former high-fashion model, and the devoted fiancée of Ethan Caldwell, slated for a multi-million-dollar society wedding that dominated the front pages of every tabloid magazine. But behind closed doors, Sabrina’s warmth vanished the moment Ethan’s private Maybach cleared the front gates. Grace was dusting the grand Victorian mantelpiece in the east parlor when she first witnessed the true face of the future mistress. Sabrina stood over little Lily, who sat rigidly at the mahogany dining table trying to eat a bowl of oatmeal. "If you drop so much as a single crumb on that rug, Lily, your uncle will find out just how ungrateful you really are," Sabrina hissed, her manicured fingers digging viciously into the child’s thin shoulder. Lily didn't cry; she had long since learned that tears only prolonged the torment. She simply stared down at her lap, her breathing shallow and trembling. Grace’s blood boiled. She stepped forward, deliberately dropping a heavy silver spoon to break the tension, announcing her presence with a crisp, polite, "Pardon me, Ms. Vance, I was instructed to polish the silver candelabras in this wing." Sabrina spun around, her eyes narrowing into cold slits of pure venom. She plastered on a sickeningly sweet smile just as the distant rumble of Ethan’s car engine echoed up the driveway. "Ah, Grace," Sabrina purred loudly for Ethan’s benefit as he walked through the double doors, "we were just discussing how much we adore little Lily." Ethan gave a tired, distracted nod, kissing Sabrina’s cheek before heading straight to his home office. He was a man drowning in corporate expansion, completely blind to the viper nesting in his bed. But Grace was not blind. Over the next three weeks, Grace quietly observed the horrifying mechanics of Sabrina’s cruelty. Sabrina systematically isolated the child, firing Lily’s loyal, kind-hearted longtime nanny under the false pretext of "budget restructuring" and replacing her with strict, uncommunicative agency temps who turned a blind eye. Most alarming to Grace was the child's physical decline. Lily grew alarmingly lethargic, her bright hazel eyes sinking into dark, bruised sockets. She would pass out mid-sentence during breakfast, slumped over her cereal bowl, while Sabrina casually explained to Ethan that the girl was simply suffering from grief-induced exhaustion. Grace knew better. She began keeping a meticulous hidden journal, documenting every unexplained symptom, every locked door, and every cruel word whispered in the shadows of the mansion.
