Chapter 8 - The Billionaire’s Awakening

Ethan Caldwell felt the room spin violently around him. For two long years, he had buried his overwhelming grief over his brother’s tragic death inside relentless corporate expansion, outsourcing the emotional care of his surviving niece to the woman he believed was an angel of grace and charity. Now, looking down at Lily’s tear-stained, terrified face, the terrifying reality of his own catastrophic blindness crashed down upon him. He ignored Sabrina’s frantic, screeching protests as she grabbed his arm, her nails digging desperately into his bespoke tuxedo jacket. "Ethan! Don't listen to her! The child is completely psychotic, she’s hallucinating from grief—!" Sabrina babbled, her voice climbing an octave into shrill hysteria. Ethan did not look at her. He gently shook her hand off his arm with a cold, absolute finality that sent a shiver through every guest in attendance. Stepping past the shattered glass, Ethan dropped to his knees right in front of little Lily, ignoring the champagne soaking the knees of his trousers. For the first time in years, the powerful tech billionaire looked genuinely human—vulnerable, broken, and filled with white-hot fury. "Lily, sweetheart," Ethan’s voice cracked, thick with unshed tears as he reached out with trembling hands, stopping just short of touching her to avoid startling her further. "Did... did they really do that to you?" Lily didn't shrink away from him. Instead, she looked up into her uncle’s eyes, raised her small hand, and tapped three clear, deliberate times against her palm—danger—before pressing her index finger firmly against Ethan's chest, giving one slow, definitive nod. Yes. The confirmation hit Ethan like a physical blow to the stomach. He stood up slowly, towering over six feet two inches, his jaw locked so tightly that the muscles in his face strained against his skin. He turned his head toward Derek, who was still groaning on the floor, and then down toward Sabrina, whose elegant mask of high-society poise had completely dissolved into a snarl of desperation. "Get out of my house," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with a suppressed rage that made even the bravest socialites in the room step backward. "All of you. Now."
